CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE - THE REASON

He softly groans at the feeling of emptiness when he stretched his arm to his side; normally, warmth from that person would welcome him, with a long arm pulling him closer. But now, he only touched the cold blanket, having no one to hug him back. He glanced at the digital clock on the nightstand. It is just 1:37 in the morning.

Frowning, he slowly climbs off the bed in search for the person who is supposed-to-be sleeping beside him. He reaches for the nearest shirt, which was actually Kyuhyun’s, and wears it, slightly getting shocked when he realized it was a bigger size that it looked like he was wearing a nightdress. It’s not much of a problem to him since he wore nightdresses before because it’s convenient.

As he turns the doorknob and pulls it, a melancholic tune fills his ears. It successfully stops him from walking. He was attracted to the sound; amazed by how it was able to reach his heart, how it was able to make him feel the sadness from the one who is playing it. Somehow, he tears up just by listening.

Just then, a smooth, rich voice was heard next. That deep voice is full of sorrow and regret, but is obviously still keeping something inside. All of his emotions weren’t portrayed; most were still bottled up. He smiles; he is hearing an angel singing.

Trying to keep his actions unnoticed, he slowly opens the door and peeks, the broad back of Kyuhyun facing him, playing the grand piano. He felt the sudden urge to embrace the man and free him from those things that are forcing him in hiding himself in the dark, from the shades of his past that are blocking his view of the brighter sides of the future.

Behind that angelic face and voice, there are dark secrets hidden. Secrets that are most possibly close to hell.

Heechul said that Kyuhyun started being a Dominant at the age of eighteen. When he was at that age, he just got into the university. He was still excited preparing to transfer to Seoul with Donghae. He was still elated at the thought of making a new set of friends and meeting different kinds of people. He was still trying to picture what his future would be in the path that he had chosen to take, promising himself to strive hard to reach his goals.

Was Kyuhyun able to experience these? Was Kyuhyun able to feel the nervousness and uneasiness while waiting for the university admission test results? Was Kyuhyun able to feel the unexplainable joy when the good news arrived? Was Kyuhyun able to feel excitement in meeting new people who he might consider as friends? Was Kyuhyun able to picture what his future would be? Was Kyuhyun able to experience the true definition of childhood?

No, because he is unlike every one of them. He’s not an ordinary kid. He is Cho Kyuhyun. An orphan turned CEO of one of the biggest companies in Asia, and is secretly a Dominant. A person who finds pleasure in seeing men and women get hurt because of him.

Was this what Kyuhyun really wanted in the first place?

He wants to know why. He wants to know what made Kyuhyun like this. He wants to know what Kyuhyun thinks and feels. He wants Kyuhyun to open up to him, to trust him. He wants to know everything about Kyuhyun, if this would be one of the few ways to help the younger.

“Did I wake you up?”

He didn’t realize that Kyuhyun had stopped playing the piano a minute ago. Blushing due to embarrassment, he smiles shyly and shakes his head. “I was just looking for you, and I ended up watching you.”

Kyuhyun sighs, scooting to the side and taps the space beside him, telling him to take a seat with him. He immediately walks to the younger and settles next to the brunet, a wide grin formed on his lips. “I didn’t know you could sing! Your voice is amazing!” Amazing was actually not the perfect word to describe how he felt when he heard Kyuhyun’s singing voice.

“I don’t sing much,” The younger mutters as his gaze drops on the white and black keyboards. He watched Kyuhyun’s slender finger press random keys. “But I play the piano a lot when I’m bored.” Kyuhyun continues.

It’s a step forward. Kyuhyun just opened something to him that not everybody knows. Kyuhyun just needs a little more pushing, but just like what Heechul said, he will not rush the boy. He will take it slowly.

“Can you play more for me?” he asks, putting up the cutest puppy eyes he could. Though looking quite hesitant, Kyuhyun agrees and starts pressing keys tentatively, glancing at him from time to time before playing properly.

It is a soft, but sad tune. He can’t help but admire both the sight and the sound. Kyuhyun playing the piano with his eyes closed is heartwarming. People often see him as the cold CEO, but all the coldness was gone now that he is indulged in his own world. The strong façade he was displaying outside of his comfort zone breaks. And Sungmin couldn’t be more thankful that he gets to witness this.

When the tune became familiar to him, he joins Kyuhyun in playing, gently hitting the keys that will blend with what Kyuhyun started. He smiles at Kyuhyun, who was looking at him weirdly at first, but as the younger smiles back, his heart raced wildly.

He likes what he is hearing. It was nothing close to being exceptional created by professional pianists, yet he thinks it is the best song he had ever heard. The soulful sound just a while ago is now replaced to a sweet and joyful one.

Maybe, just maybe, this could happen to Kyuhyun, too. The sadness of the man could be turned to happiness if there would be one person who would be with him, to join him in everything he does. He hopes he will be that person.

“That was marvelous…” he comments breathily, still having a hangover on what just transpired. He didn’t want it to end, but their fingers gave up after long minutes of continuous playing.

He hears a hum of affirmation from the younger. The man is not saying anything, but he can see the childlike smile gracing Kyuhyun’s beautiful face. It is the first time he looked at Kyuhyun’s peaceful face this close. Kyuhyun would always be sleeping whenever he gets the chance to, and sadly, even in his sleep, Kyuhyun looked troubled. He never looked this happy since the time they met.

He would love to see more of this side of the guy more.

Slowly, he reaches for Kyuhyun’s face and cups his cheeks, not failing to notice the slight flinch of the brown-haired. It was just out of surprise, he thought.

He leans closer and softly presses his lips on Kyuhyun’s. Having to initiate something like this for the first time, he shyly deepens the kiss. Kyuhyun kisses back, and he was more than relieved that it was a gentle one. No tongues and teeth, just their lips moving on each other.

From the start, he had wanted to touch Kyuhyun’s chest. He had already seen it, even if it’s not too clear due to the darkness, but he was curious as to how it would feel on his palm and fingers.

Cautiously, he brings his hand from Kyuhyun’s face to the guy’s chest, pulling away from the kiss in disappointment when Kyuhyun holds his wrist, preventing him to touch it.

“No.” Kyuhyun whispers while putting the hand down on his lap and kisses Sungmin’s jawline.

He whimpers. “Why?”

Kyuhyun halts his actions and moves to look at him straightly. They stare at each other for a while before Kyuhyun gives up with a sigh.

“I-I was abused by my biological father when I was still young,” he widens his eyes as Kyuhyun started talking. “H-He did things… that fathers shouldn’t do their child. Everytime I see the faint scars on my chest and whenever I touch it, I remember everything… I don’t want to remember it anymore, hyung…”

Kyuhyun looks like he’s at the verge of breaking down. He immediately takes the younger man in his arms and offers the comfort he needs. Indeed, Kyuhyun had a shady past. He wants to help Kyuhyun forget it.

“Ssh, you will forget it… but let me help you get rid of it. Let me… please let me touch you. Kyuhyun… you can’t stay like that forever…”

“But hyung, I’ve never let anyone touch me, even Mimi…”

An eyebrow rose at the unfamiliar name. “Who is Mimi?”

At this, Kyuhyun bites his lip and looks down, his answer almost a whisper. “H-He… He’s Zhou Mi. He’s my first Submissive. H-He’s the one who introduced this to me…”

Somehow, he feels his blood boil. So this Zhou Mi person was the one who made Kyuhyun like this. Who in the right mind would push a teenager to do such things? Who really is this Zhou Mi? He feels the man’s a threat to his goal on Kyuhyun. He should talk to Heechul about this.

He forces a smile. “Thank you for telling me, Kyu. I will not force you. But we should go back to sleep now. You’re stressed with work lately.”

Kyuhyun sighs and smiles back, much to his surprise and delight. They stand up and make their way to the bedroom, hand-in-hand. He feels happy. Kyuhyun opened up to him, just like what he wants. It’s enough to understand the man; however, he needs more. He needs to completely understand Kyuhyun.

He will do that some other time. For now, his next goal is to help Kyuhyun get over his fears of his past.

“By the way, I bought the Park’s.” Kyuhyun adds as he stops from walking.

“What?”

“I am now the owner of Park Publishing Company.”

He nods absentmindedly, not really in the mood for hearing Kyuhyun brag about his possessions. And then it hit him. Park Publishing Company is where he works at. Kyuhyun wants him to work under his management that bad? And it’s not just owning majority of the stocks, he bought the entire company.

Even before he could say anything, Kyuhyun pulls him giddily to their room.

~0~

He feels dizzy looking at the prices of all the clothes Kyuhyun are making him try. A shirt in this particular store costs a number that he can’t pay even if he works 24/7 plus the sidelines and overtimes. Of course he can’t complain because it is in the rules that Kyuhyun will provide him clothes of his choice. Kyuhyun has a good sense of fashion, though.

When Kyuhyun excused himself, he remembers that he still needs to call Heechul regarding that Zhou Mi person, whoever he is. Good thing that Heechul immediately answered.

“What’s up, honey? Any news?”

“Can you describe how this Zhou Mi something looks like?”

“Oh, so Kyuhyun already told you about him?”

He nods, even though Heechul will not see him. He mentally slaps himself for doing that.

“He’s tall. Reeeaaally tall. Taller than Kyuhyun, yes. He has long thin legs, like a bamboo stick. Also, he’s a Chinese. You can tell by the accent when he speaks our language. And he fucking smiles in an annoying manner all the time, but you’ll know they’re merely bitchy and fake. Ugh, I hate it. That’s all you need to know.”

He took notes of all of it in his mind and tried imagining it while Heechul is describing Zhou Mi. To no avail, he was not able to do it because his imagination sucks. There are many Chinese who has long legs. Damn Heechul for being vague. The major thing that he has got to base on was the smile. He may be a bit slow at times, but he knows how to determine and true smile from a fake one.

“Oh, before I forget. Just a warning, you will soon meet Zhou Mi. It’s inevitable.”

“Huh? What do you mean?”

“I have to go, pumpkin! Hannie is calling me~ bye~”

To his disappointment, Heechul already hung up. Heechul is useful when it comes to information whenever he wants to be, but he’s just too weird to believe sometimes. If not for the fact that he is Kyuhyun’s psychiatrist, he will not believe the man.

Then, he heard a cough from behind. He quickly turns, thinking it was Kyuhyun, but was welcomed by an unknown person.

He quickly observes the tall stranger, who was smiling widely at him.

He’s tall. Reeeaaally tall. Taller than Kyuhyun, yes. He has long thin legs, like a bamboo stick.

“You must be Sungmin-ssi?”

Also, he’s a Chinese. You can tell by the accent when he speaks our language.

He slowly nods, trying to digest everything in his mind. He just hopes he is wrong at what he is thinking, and this is just a coincidence. This shouldn’t be happening this soon. Is Heechul a fortune teller?

The man smiles.

And he fucking smiles in an annoying manner all the time, but you’ll know they’re merely bitchy and fake.

“I’m Zhou Mi. Pleasure to meet you.”
