“Have you already experienced choosing between something you had to do and something you want to do? Do you know how hurts it is being in between?”

She wanted to cry the moment a single red line appeared on that white rectangular thing. She wanted to cry at the fact that she just can’t get anything that she wants. It is like everything is against her. She is not, yet again, pregnant.

`

“You are a polycystic, Sungmin,” Dr. Park sadly announced after reviewing her ultrasound results. Sungmin and Kyuhyun looked at each other, obviously shocked at the revelation. Sungmin blinked her eyes twice, turned to the OB Gyne with a worried expression, “I… Does that mean that… I… I can’t get pregnant?”

“Of course not. You are just having troubles in getting pregnant. You still can be impregnated, but it will be a hard and long process. We have to regulate your menstrual cycle first before finding out if your body is already capable,” The doctor explained while altering her gazes to the couple.

“Don’t lose hope, Ms. Lee,” she turned to the male, who is still silent due to shock, “Mr. Cho, please help your wife in this, okay? This will be effective if you will also cooperate.” Kyuhyun blindly nodded.

“Kyu, I’m sorry,” Sungmin melancholically whispered the moment they are settled inside their car. Kyuhyun tilted his head to look at his wife, sighing inaudibly when he saw her sobbing silently, her head down, face covered by her silky black hair.

He reached for the woman’s head, pushed it near him, and kissed the top, whispering, “Ssh, it’s okay, baby… there’s nothing to be sorry for… it’s not your fault that science is being a bitch to you… please don’t cry…” He brushed away the strands of hair covering his beautiful wife’s face, cupped her cheeks, wiped her tears using his thumb, and kissed her forehead, calming her for a bit.

“We can do this, okay? I love you.”

She and her husband, Kyuhyun, had been a married couple for five years now. Since then, they had been attempting to have a child. For five years, they wished for an angel to come by their lives. For five years, Sungmin wanted to give her husband a child, someone they will brag about, someone they will show others, especially Kyuhyun’s parents, that their love bore a fruit.

It had been hard for both of them. Kyuhyun came from a very affluent family, while Sungmin grew up as an orphan. They met at the arts university where Sungmin got a scholarship, which was, apparently, owned by Kyuhyun’s mother, also, where he was studying. They are under the same major and coincidentally had the same schedules.

Sungmin may be an orphan, but she is very pretty. Her beauty is the angelic type; the perfect embodiment of innocence, which complements her gentle voice and sweet character. A modern goddess, indeed. This is the reason why lots of men were captivated by her, including her bratty, game-freak seatmate, who was teasing her all the time, when little she did know that this brat was already trying to get her attention… which, surprisingly, worked.

Being alone as she grows up, she continued believing that the fantasies in those fairy tales are true… that everything has its happy ending… that she will meet her prince charming one fateful day… fall in love at first sight… fight evil witches… and then live happily ever after.

She thought that the prince charming she would fall for is a good-looking, princely type - those who looked like he came from a manga - just like her acting clubmate, Kim Kibum… or those who has a well-built body like a god, which their Student Council President Choi Siwon does have… not some nerdy dork like Game Kyu, a.k.a. Cho Kyuhyun.

The two princes mentioned courted her, yes; however, she doesn’t know why her heart didn’t seem to jump high when those two are there as much as it does when Kyuhyun throws her his cheesy corny pick-up lines.

For two years, she hid her feelings. She feigned a mask in front of Kyuhyun; that she isn’t affected by his teasing, that her insides will not melt once he smiles, and that her stomach wouldn’t flip when he says how much he loves her… No. She still tried hiding it despite the big changes this boy had showed just to get her.

Reality.

She has to face reality, for handsome princes riding on a white horse don’t exist. Not in Korea. She is not a princess. She is not rich. She is just a mere stray soul without a family. Kyuhyun is the very opposite of her. Heaven and Land. Alpha and Omega. Opposites. Opposites don’t, and will never, attract.

But Kyuhyun is persistent. The guy was able to convince her that he will fight for their love… that he is willing to go against his parents just for her… that she is the only one in his heart… She doesn’t know what spell he casted on her is; she only knows that she eloped with Kyuhyun after they made love at her apartment one fateful, hot evening.

Everything went fast forwarded then. As they settled on a province where they hid for years already, they found themselves exchanging marriage vows in front of the judge with Sungmin’s best friends - Donghae and Yesung - and Kyuhyun’s best friend, Changmin, as witnesses. That was the day Sungmin officially became Kyuhyun’s other half.

For five years, they worked hard to live. For five years, they managed to survive without Kyuhyun’s parents’ help. For five years, they also tried having an angel… a child that they would call their own. But for five years, they failed to.

Being a young married couple is hard… but they wanted this. They have to accept the consequences.

“Unnie, I feel like Kyu is being distant to me lately…” Sungmin shyly whined to her workmate, Heechul. She is currently working at a café near their place, which was owned by a Chinese businessman - who is actually Heechul’s boyfriend.

Heechul raised an eyebrow as she stopped preparing the cheesecake, “What? How?”

Sungmin bit her lips. Her suspicions will just rise if she continues thinking about it… but she just needs to blurt it out to someone she trusts… she desperately needs to let this out from her chest… and she knows Heechul could help her. “We don’t kiss anymore… well, I do try kissing him, but it is as if he was avoiding it… he will only kiss me on the forehead, and then that’s it. When he goes home from work, he doesn’t even greet me or talk to me… he will just go straight to our room, and then he sleeps. He wakes up earlier than me… he goes to work even before I wake up… I’m so scared, unnie…”

“That he’s cheating on you?”

She nodded, tears now pooling around her eyes.

“Because you still don’t have a baby?”

She didn’t nod… but it struck her.

Heechul sighed exasperatedly whilst she scratched her head. She hates seeing her precious dongsaeng like this. “Then, don’t let him cheat on you again.”

“H-How?”

Heechul placed a hand on the younger’s shoulder, her face serious as if she’s on a business meeting. “I think it is time for you to go out from your shell. Stop being this ‘innocent princess’ now, and be a fierce chick. No, you will not be a slut. I am just telling you to show more skin to your husband and get intimate with him! When your partner’s flame is dying, light it up again! It may sound harsh, but this is the truth: Men’s weaknesses are vaginas of sexy babes.”

Sungmin showed a scandalized expression due to Heechul’s flaunty usage of words, making the older woman shake her head in disappointment. “Stop being Ms. Conservative, Min! You will do anything to get your husband back, right? Don’t let go of him! You already went through lots of sufferings these past years! Do you think you will just end it like this? Fuck no! And there is no way that I will leave you like that! I am so going to help you in this! Fuck that Cho.”

Kyuhyun entered the apartment, finding it weird that his wife cannot be seen near the area. She isn’t even in the kitchen where she always used to be. Thinking that she probably went out to buy some stuff, he shrugged and walked towards the bedroom.

As he opened the door, his eyes widened at the sight of the exposed back of Sungmin, who is just covered by a thin towel, her hair is bun-tied that’s why her nape was displayed to his eyes. He had seen Sungmin naked before, but it seemed like there is something different in her now… something that he can’t put his finger on… must be because of her fresh rose-scented perfume?

He unconsciously gulped and loosened his tie as he took a step inside, and closed the door, making his wife jump in surprise and snap her body to face him, only for her towel to detach from her body, revealing what’s under.

She gasped and quickly crouched to pick her only cover, wrapping it around her torso, cheeks blushing profusely. After securing her body, she cheekily greeted Kyuhyun, skipping towards him, “Welcome home, Kyu~! How’s work?”

To her surprise… and delight, Kyuhyun chuckled and patted her head whilst he made his way towards the closet to get some clothes to wear.

Maybe Heechul-unnie is right…

She grinned inwardly as she followed her spouse to do the same, earning a curious gaze from the man. She continued looking through her clothes, aware of the stares the man was giving her. Wanting to have Kyuhyun reach the peak of his patience, she pretended that her panty slipped her hand, so she had to bend over to pick it up, showing him part of her unclothed bottom.

Kyuhyun probably lost his rationality right now. Sungmin’s milky thighs are the best.

“No underwear, baby?” Kyuhyun huskily whispered, his eyes following the woman’s every actions. Sungmin turned to him, innocently raising the undergarment thru her fingers, “I just took a bath…”

Kyuhyun inched closer to her, his fingers did the job of removing the barrier to Sungmin’s delectable body from his view, and breathed on her lips before claiming it, “I missed you so fucking much, you know…”

Heechul grinned when Sungmin entered the employees’ quarter, all bouncy and bright. “Someone had fun last night~” The latter blushed, making their boss whine at his girlfriend, “Don’t tease Sungminnie like that…”

The red-haired smirked at her lover whilst she wrapped her arms around Hangeng’s waist, “I was referring to us, Hannie.”

“So, what happened, sunshine?” Hangeng asked the young woman, who beamed and skipped, “He kissed me on the lips before he went to work! He actually waited for me to wake up!” The couple smiled; their cheerful and sweet Sungmin is now back to being herself. They just wished that she won’t be lonely again. It hurts them seeing Sungmin crying.

“Sungie oppa~! You’re here~!” Sungmin almost yelled the moment she saw her male best friend - a fellow orphan - enter the café’s glass doors. Yesung held the girl’s arms to prevent her from jumping once again, a smile painted on his handsome face, “Whoa, whoa, baby girl, you seem so happy. Can I ask why?”

“Can I answer that?” Heechul suddenly butted in their conversation with a smug grin, making Sungmin cover the older woman’s talkative mouth and push her to the counter. She then faced her best friend, smiling sheepishly at him, “It is nothing, oppa! Good vibes~~~”

She held the guy’s hand, led him to a round table, and let him take a seat whilst she fished out a small notebook from her apron’s pocket, “What do you want to order, sir?”

“Can I order you?” Yesung joked. Sungmin laughed; her Yesung oppa really is like that to her.

~0~

Sungmin’s shift ended early because it was Hangeng’s and Heechul’s anniversary; they would obviously go on a date.

“Sungie oppa, when do you plan on getting married?” Sungmin asked out of the blue. They are now on the grounds of the public school where Donghae - her female best friend - and Kyuhyun are currently working. Through the help of Donghae, Kyuhyun was able to teach in that school despite not graduating in College. Kyuhyun’s intelligence also contributed a lot to that.

Yesung dryly chuckled as he stared at his feet and stuffed his hands in his pants’ pockets, “I don’t even have a girlfriend, Min,” The girl placed her hands - which hold a paper bag of cream puffs in it - on her back, crouched a bit, and tilted her head to look at the guy, “Why? You’re already 27! You should start finding the love of your life!” she dreamily said.

The guy just smiled. “I don’t know, Min. She will come soon… I think,” Sungmin pursed her lips as she clutched onto her best friend’s arm, “It’s okay, oppa! That girl would be the luckiest to have you! I’m sure that someone will come into your life.”

He giggled and pinched her nose, making the girl cutely scrunch it at the contact. “Yeah. I hope so.”

Being close with the school guard, Shindong, they were able to enter the school without someone inspecting them. The duo immediately went to the faculty room, but their reasons of visiting could not be found at said place. Sungmin tried calling Kyuhyun’s or Donghae’s phones, but no one was answering. Even the teachers present have no idea where those two are.

Left with no choice, they decided to just go home; thinking that Kyuhyun and Donghae might be doing something important as of this moment, since classes have already ended.

However, as they passed by the quiet hall, faint sounds of moans ringed inside their ears. They just thought that it probably came from horny students who couldn’t resist their urges until they successfully go home.

“Aaahhh… Mmmff…”

They shrugged. They were about to change directions…

“Kyu…”

She bit her lips, ignoring the noise made by her chest. She tried convincing herself that there are lots of people having the same nickname as her husband… that it was just a coincidence that they heard it… no, Kyuhyun wouldn’t do it. Kyuhyun will not cheat.

“Was that Donghae’s voice?” She heard Yesung from beside her ask lowly, more like thinking to himself rather loudly. Her chest pounded harder and faster. She wants to go. She doesn’t want to know… to be aware… to think that her husband must have been cheating on her with her best friend.

But then, there are times that what we want to do isn’t what we actually ended up doing.

Her feet involuntarily led her in front of the laboratory room where the moans were coming from. She could hear two familiar voices from inside. She wants to confirm it. She wants to humiliate herself for thinking of the wrong thing. She would actually prefer that to happen. It would sometimes be better to be embarrassed in front of unknown people if that would mean the fallacy of her thoughts right now.

“Min… wait… what are you doing?” Yesung weakly asked, his hand reaching to grab the woman’s wrist.

She pushed the door open, heart beat unsteadily when the moans stopped. It feels like her time suddenly turned to slow motion whilst she diverted her gaze to the couple near the counter. Her whole world broke as the sight of her best friend sitting on top of the counter, with her husband’s hand placed inside her best friend’s entrance, welcomed her very eyes.

“Min…” Kyuhyun and Donghae breathily muttered at the same time, shock written all over their faces. They were too stunned to move.

And now, Sungmin’s speed of time went back to normal as tears started bursting out from her doe eyes, heart feeling being squeezed tight that she can’t even speak properly.

“I knew I shouldn’t have checked you up.” She bitterly said before storming away, with Yesung instantly running after her.

“Min, wait!” Donghae yelled as she pushed Kyuhyun away from her and moved to put her underwear on and run, but a hand stopped her. She turned to the man and saw him looking at the window, tears threatening to fall from his eyes. “Kyuhyunnie…”

Heechul clenched her fists as she feels anger burning her body, though she tried her very best to calm herself down for her wretched dongsaeng, who is now using her shoulder for comfort.

“I will kill that fucking husband of yours… and his bitch.” Heechul hissed whilst stroking the younger’s hair.

“Don’t hurt them, unnie…” Sungmin weakly muttered in between controlled sobs, making the older move slightly away from her to hold her shoulders, “What the fuck, Minnie, they fucking hurt you! They obviously cheated on you! And look, your husband, I repeat, your husband, didn’t even have the decency to explain to you! I don’t care if Donghae is your best friend! She knows that you are married to Kyuhyun, so how dare she cheat on you with him?! She also has a boyfriend, right? Geez!”

She was just trying to drill some sense in her dongsaeng’s mind, but it seemed that Sungmin just went more confused than ever. She cupped the younger’s cheeks and looked deeply at her teary doe eyes, “Look, Min, I took care of you like you are my sister in blood, that’s why I acted like this. I hate seeing you cry. I’m sorry for what I have said, baby…” Sungmin just shook her head and nuzzled her nose on Heechul’s neck.

Yesung ruefully stared at Sungmin, regretting that he had never made a move on her from the start.

Sungmin inserted the key to the door of their apartment, finding it surprising that it was actually unlocked. She quickly pushed it open, only to gape at the sight of a large luggage on the living room. She just stood there, frozen, until her husband emerged from their bedroom, who almost jerked in surprise when he noticed her.

“What is the meaning of this?” she croaked, on the verge of crying once again. Her eyes really hurt; she can’t count the times she had cried this day. Kyuhyun sighed as he held the handle of the bag, “We should part ways, Sungmin. It didn’t work on us,”

He briskly made his way out of the place; however, Sungmin gripped an arm of his tight and said, “Kyuhyun, please don’t leave me… I need you…” Kyuhyun didn’t spare her a glance, and harshly pried his arm away from her hands, firmly saying, “I’m sorry, Min, but I also need a child.”

After that, Sungmin’s knees fell on the floor, sobbing as she stares at the retreating back of her husband. It’s all over. Everything they’ve worked hard for is gone. Why is her life like this? Why does it feel like everything is turning its back on her and leave her suffering? Why is life unfair to her?

She bitterly chuckled after taking notice of a white folder innocently perched on the coffee table; the words ‘Divorce Papers’ are written on it.

People should stop creating those fairytales to give children the impression of having a happy ending with their loved one, for everything written on those are all stupid fat lies. For Sungmin, there is no such thing as a happy ending. Her fairytale love story had just ended.

~0~

Three months had passed and their divorce was already effective through the help of Kyuhyun’s family. Sure, Sungmin shed a hundred drums of tears for the past months, but due to the encouragement of her friends, she was able to compose herself, especially in front of Kyuhyun and Donghae.

Donghae even had the guts to approach Sungmin after that… but she is only doing that to ask for forgiveness from her best friend. There were times that Sungmin would be at the edge of giving what Donghae was desperately asking for, but Heechul is always there to knock some sense into her thick skull.

“They fucking cheated on you and her boyfriend! And she is your fucking best friend, Min! And your fucking best friend fucking knows that you are fucking married to that fucking guy she is fucking with who happens to be your fucking husband!!” Heechul screamed whilst she paces the room, pulling her hair in frustration; she just saw Sungmin talking to Donghae for the umpteenth time. Heechul heaved a deep breath when Hangeng tried to calm her down by patting her shoulders. “Damn it, Sungmin, you are trying to make me look a hundred years above my real age!”

“But, unnie, Hae is still my best friend… we share the same experiences and she helped Kyuhyun and me a lot…” Sungmin held back a sob. Heechul is really scary like a witch. Yesung just held her hand, squeezing it to let her know that he is just there for her.

“Exactly!” Heechul snapped. “You have been best friends since childhood so she should know better than to cheat with your husband! She is not your real friend!” She sighed after hearing Sungmin let out a controlled cry. “Minnie, all I ask of you is to stay away from them for now. You still have a fragile broken heart to heal…” she said in all gentleness she could pull off, making the younger look up at her with those doe eyes.

~0~

They sat on the sofa in silence, enjoying the company each other gives even if no word was spoken as of now. She fiddles with her fingers while he was staring at the half-filled coffee cup.

“Minnie-ah,” he started.

She pursed her lips as she tilted her head to look at the older male, heart skipping a beat the moment their hopeful eyes met, choosing to hum in response. She can’t trust her voice right now. Somehow.

“I…” he trailed off. She held his cold hand, giving it a tight squeeze for encouragement; just like how he does it to her.

He smiled then sighed lightly, closing his eyes in the process. He placed the cup back to the table before shifting his sitting position so he could face Sungmin completely.

“How are you feeling now?”

Sungmin smiled gently - the smile that made Yesung fall for her. “I am better now, oppa… better than ever.”

“Is… Is that so? Then, that’s great. You should smile often… you look your best when you smile.”

The smile didn’t wipe off of her face, but was replaced by a wider grin from her. Yesung nervously chuckled, his gaze falling on their entwined fingers. He still finds it funny that his hands were almost the same size as hers… but will never be as soft as hers. Now that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Yesung went back to staring at those pair of lovely doe eyes, “Minnie… I… I want to bring that wonderful smile of yours back… can I be the one to make you happy again? I promise you that I will not hurt you… You know I never will…”

Sungmin’s expression fell; she kind of had a hunch on what her male best friend is talking about. Not that she doesn’t trust Yesung, but she was more worried of the fact that she can’t give a guy a child.

“Oppa…”

“I love you, Sungmin.” There, he already said it after more than ten years of keeping it. Somewhere in his mind knew that this kind of incident would happen, probably the reason why he didn’t let go of his special feelings for his dongsaeng… though he never wished for something like this to happen.

She stayed silent. She ran out of words due to surprise. She never thought that Yesung loves her way differently as she loves him. To be honest, she only sees the guy as a friend. That polycystic condition of hers still bothers her. She doesn’t want to be selfish anymore because she ends up hurting herself.

“Oppa… I can’t get pregnant…” Yesung is not Kyuhyun… but just like all other men in the world, he also needs a child.

To her surprise, Yesung smiled and slowly shook his head, “So? I’m willing to spend my lifetime with you even if we have no child to call our own.”

Tears dropped from her eyes as she lets go of Yesung’s hands and brought hers to cover her face so as to muffle her cries. “But that’s what Kyuhyun said to me before we got married…” Yesung scooted nearer the woman and enveloped her in his arms, pushing her head to his shoulder.

“I know… that is why I won’t be repeating the same mistake Kyuhyun had done. Please give me a chance to prove myself to you… I will do my best.”

Yesung kissed her forehead when he felt her nod on his shoulder.

A clichéd scene just like in the movies. On a date, place and time you wouldn’t expect the most for you to cross paths. That awkward moment when there are few people outside because it is just six in the morning, and you happened to land on the same spot.

She never goes out that early, but she was feeling sickly these past few days so she decided to take an early walk, thinking that this could most likely calm her senses.

Unfortunately, she didn’t calm down that second they coincidentally stepped beside the stoplight. Even if she is happily together with Yesung, her heart never failed to beat wildly whenever Kyuhyun is there.

“Hey,” they said at the same time, blush creeping on their pale cheeks.

“Long time no see,” Kyuhyun said through the thick scarf covering half of his face, voice slightly shaking.

“Yeah,” Sungmin sighed, chuckling bitterly as she stares up at the three circles on the tall post, glaring at the bright green circle on the bottom.

“You look fine. That’s good,”

Sungmin averted her gaze to the tall man beside her and observed him. He had grown awfully thinner, eyebags bulged, and hair disheveled. This is not the Kyuhyun she knew. This is much more terrible than how this guy looked back the first time she met him. A sudden pang in her chest made her cringe as tears pooled inside her eyes.

“You look terrible,” she commented after a minute of deliberation.

Kyuhyun looked straight at the pedestrian lane, not minding that there is not a single car passing by, laughing lethargically.

“Min-ah, have you already experienced choosing between something you had to do and something you want to do?” he asked out of nowhere.

Sungmin did the same thing as he did, though a different thought runs in her mind. “Lots of times, Kyu… lots of times…”

“I really am sorry for being a coward, Min.”

The woman sighed exasperatedly, looking up to hold her tears back, “Kyuhyun-ah, why is life so unfair?”

“Nothing in this world is fair, Sungmin. We just have to know how to fight it and make it closer to being fair.”

Just then, the green light died and the red one on top shined mockingly at them. Without any words and glance, she hastily walked away from the man.

“I love you…”

She ignored that. She tried convincing herself that she was just having delusions because no matter how you flip the world, Kyuhyun is still the one she loves.

She was too busy clearing her thoughts of hugging Kyuhyun and ask him to come back to her that she didn’t hear a car approaching her direction in a very fast speed.

“SUNGMIN!!!!!!!”

She felt her butt falling harshly on the ground, tears falling when she opened her eyes after hearing loud screams from women around the vicinity.

Kyuhyun was out of sight.

She saw nothing but pure black after.

~0~

“Sungmin…”

“Hae…”

“I need to tell you something… please listen to me…”

“Go on…”

“I broke up with Hyukjae five months ago…”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I’m sorry… you had been experiencing problems that time regarding Kyuhyun that’s why I don’t want this to be a burden to you…”

“…”

“The reason why Kyuhyun did that was because of his parents. They found you two a year ago. Ever since they knew that you’re having problems in getting pregnant, they threatened Kyuhyun that they will hurt you if he didn’t leave you. They want Kyuhyun to give them an heir to their company, and they said that you are incapable of doing it. I saw him crying alone one day, and there he told me everything. We were both broken that’s why we resorted to making each other feel good. It went on for a month… until that time when you caught us.

We stopped that. We forgot that what we are doing is a grave sin… especially to you. It was too late. You already saw us. So, Kyuhyun was left with no choice but to file a divorce for he doesn’t have a face to show you after that. He asked help from his parents to make the process easier, which they willingly agreed to, but he never stayed under the same roof with them. He lived like hell since the divorce, Min. He won’t accept Changmin and mine’s help. He loves you so much that he sacrificed your marriage so that his parents will not hurt you…”

She wanted to cry the moment two red lines appeared on that white rectangular thing. She wanted to cry at the fact that she just can’t get anything that she wants. It is like everything is against her. She is now, at last, pregnant… just when Kyuhyun is gone.
