22 VVC 09 vid recs

Disclaimer: I suppose these are more (entirely subjective) reactions than recs as such. But words are hard and a vid has to get under your skin for any to come. There is no bad. There is much good. Links to all vids and vid shows are here.

Non-attending Premieres

Elevation by Andraste I really like the way it starts by portraying the Iron Man as pure wish fulfillment but then reminds us that Stark needs that technology just to stay alive. He’s Icarus and Daedelus in equal measure.

Stars by Keely The restraint in the reveal is a killer. You know it’s coming but not how and when it does come it’s so unexpectedly subtle.

Beast of Burden by sweetestdrain Merlin is everybody’s manwhore little black dress.

Club Vivid

Start the Commotion by Danegen Is this show the American Hustle? I keep wanting to compare it with vagabondage’s 2007 vid Bankshot . That was theatrical, this is a movie, and one that feels like the most fun you can have on a computer screen.

Mothership by Laura Shapiro Wayward police box of glee. The most fun you can have on a computer screen.

Break Teen Spirit in Four Minutes by dragonchic So this movie may have been written by a committee of 13 year old boys but when remixed by a genius. It’s the most fun you can have on a computer screen.

I'm not Dead by Dualbunny She is my sunshine.

Lucky Me by Milly Poor Buffy :-)

Seven Nation Army by Charmax We shall fight them on the beaches and in the fields and on the streets. And with big fuck-off guns and on motorcycles.

Bale Out by kiki_miserychic Fuck!

That's What I Want by Carol S She’s exactly what it says on the tin.

Army of Me by LithiumDoll What Sarah will do to protect John. What Cameron will do. The cost in other people’s lives. What John learns from them. It’s like an infection. It’s love.

Premieres One

Sea Fever by here's luck I’m not a theatre person. They’re strange noisy places where the actors always seem to be shouting at you. But in this vid I get it. As the tide of it flows and ebbs, a phantom sea longing washes over the unbeliever.

All Apologies by Cappy They’re vampires. Playing baseball. Comedy gold with extra sparkles.

We Are by dragonchic Thrillingly edited, the clarity of the multiply overlaid final sequence is quite jaw dropping, but it feels like a BSG theme imposed on a fundamentally different show.

Mad About You by Gwyneth Almost literally uncomfortable to watch. The women disappear into the clothes. My mother still has a wardrobe stuffed with those styles. I used to dress up in them.

Marble House by hollywoodgrrl This captures you from the beginning. Distant planets click like marbles, impossible cities rise, galaxies spin and then suddenly it plunges you into the all too human reality of the 1914-18 war. Which changes things. It’s the lions led by donkeys war and suddenly Time Lords are donkeys. Which seems to be born out by the relationship between Martha the maid (actually the only person who understands what’s happening) and the Doctor as John Smith. And he chooses a woman of his own class. But I don’t know how the Family fit and then the fob watch reveals the Doctor to be genuinely superior. The donkey deity, the emperor with real clothes. The ending still works either way, he dances while they die but I’m reading this all wrong. It’s beautiful and seamless but I’m wrong.

Video Killed the Radio Star by Dualbunny In fabulous technicolor

Premieres Two

Then The Morning Comes by Eunice For various reasons I’ve never watched the end of this movie and it turns out even better and more joyful than promised.

That Was Another Country by Kass Never watched the show at all but something about this guy gets its hooks into you. The ending when it seems as if he can’t even be certain the good times really happened is tragic.

Comfortably Numb by sisabet There's a disconnect initially between the gridded, affectless visuals and the all too human vocal but it comes together around the time Alison appears. Somehow she’s the POV or what’s left of her, a memory, an imprint. It shouldn’t work but you want it to.

Don't Stop Me Now by Jetpack MonkeyPeter Cushing plays the Wiley E Coyote of Promethean endeavor.
