-We all (well, almost all) get hair cuts
-What about people who get electrolisis / hair removal, etc?
-Going tanning? (either at a salon or 'laying out')
-Purchasing/wearing whatever styles/brands are popular at the moment (why do you need a sweatshirt with an Abercrombie/Hollister/Polo/Gucci/whatever label/logo on it?)
-Buying a BWM/Lexus/etc (you can buy a reliable & safe car without it being a 'status symbol')
Basically, any "group" -- middle aged yuppies, teeny-boppers, early 20-somethings business people, ad infinium -- is going to have is trappings, things that characterize it as a group.
For "hipsters" (the group I'm probably most familiar with, around my neighborhood these days) - its tight jeans, cowboy shirts, fixed gear / old school road bikes, tattoos, piercings, etc... I do not think this represents EITHER self loathing or (necessarily) a comformist attitude... just represents the social milieu in which we travel.

ps, shortly after reading this I went out and got my first tattoo (I was actually suppose to do it the previous day, my birthday, but the shop I wanted to go to was closed.)
