Chapter 5:

Kazuya went home happy, because she had spent a day with Jin, but exhausted from work of course. She went directly home planning to take a shower, to reminisce on that day, and to rest for the night.

She arrived at her comfy home and to her surprise; Ueda was waiting for her sitting on the couch with her dog.

“Well… Where have you been?” He asked in a jokingly tone.
“Oh sh*t… I totally forgot dinner.” She cursed.

It was their dinner night together. Kazuya supposedly cook dinner and ate it with Ueda. But unfortunately she forgot everything about it especially since her mind was occupied by Jin.

She dropped her bag and went straight to the kitchen to cook for dinner.

“Dinner? With who?” Ueda questioned.
“A guy that I met. I bumped into him and we got something to eat.” Kazuya explained as she closed the refrigerator door.

Jin was just standing there listening and watching to their conversation. And yes, he was invisible that time.

“Did you pack my backpack?” She intentionally changed the topic seeing her packed backpack at a corner.
“What else?” Ueda curiously asked about the guy Kazuya met.
“We talked… and then I got beeped and he disappeared. Why did you pack my backpack?”
“I taught we’ll be going to Fukuoka, to use your uncle’s cabin… Maybe do a little hiking.”
“What?” she replied surprised with the idea.

She wasn’t sure what he was planning. All she knew was that she didn’t want to leave Tokyo especially when she finally met the guy that she felt would make her happy.

“So what did you and your friend - what did you say his name was?” Ueda asked as he went back to the topic earlier.
“Ah… Jin.” She replied
“So… What did you two talk about?”
“Dying.”

Ueda gave her a “Are you kidding me?” kind of look. “What kind of guy would talk about death with a girl he just met?” He thought.

“Come on, tat-chan. We deal with life and death everyday… Why can’t we talk about it?” Kazuya defended her answer.
“I hope you won’t become a surgeon who prays in the O.R.” He jokingly answered.
“Can we talk for a minute?”
“We can talk while were camping.”
“Tat-chan, I can’t go camping now.” She answered, pissed off.
“We need some time together.” He reasoned out.
“Ok… Alright, Let’s see if we can just spend 5 minutes… Let’s see if we can just stand still together for 5 minutes. And just be together” She suggested.
“Doing what?” He asked.
“Just being here.”
“I’ll get the trail map.”
“no… I mean it… Nothing but us.”
“What are we supposed to do?”
“Just look at me.”

They stood on the kitchen looking and staring closely at each other. After just a few seconds, they burst out laughing on how dumb that idea was.

“You can’t do it! You flinched. You lose.” Ueda said while laughing and teasing her.
“No.. You cheated!” She defended.

They ran around the house like little kids. Jin, on the other hand, was right there watching them both conversing and laughing. He felt something he never felt before. He doesn’t know what it was and for us humans it is something we call “jealousy”.
--

Back at the hospital, Hideaki Takizawa was watching T.V. He switched one channel after the other bored and unsatisfied with the programs shown.

“You want to watch anything?” He asked someone sitting on a chair beside his hospital bed.

If humans would look at it, no one was in there. They might think that Hideaki has gone crazy. But to him, it’s a different story. He knew someone was there. And that someone was Jin.

“Me neither.” Hideaki replied as if he heard Jin answer “no”.

He turned off the T.V. since he couldn’t see any interesting channel to watch.

“How do you know when I’m here?” Jin asked allowing himself to be seen by the other male.

Hideaki looked at him, gave him a warm smile and said “Hello.”

“Jeez… You look good. I forgot how good everybody looked… 30 years of silence… you got guts, kid, showing yourself like that. I appreciate that, I do. It’s going to make it easier” He added

Now Hideaki is not alone, his happy to talk to someone. His boredom has vanished.

“I got to tell you, I feel fine. You might want to check your orders or something because I’m sure I don’t feel like dying.” Hideaki continually added.
“You’re not dying.” Jin defended.
“Oh right… Then how come you’re hanging around my room all the time? I’m the only one with his ass hanging out of his dress.” He jokingly questioned.

Jin didn’t answer. “Why would he think I’m interested in him anyway?” He thought.

“ Unless… Could it be… the doctor?” Hideaki assumed.

Jin’s eyes opened widely as Hideaki finally realized his real intentions being there all the time.

“Oh my gosh… Sure… The doctor… Oh she’s pretty… A little flat-chested but hey, all you need is a handful.” He added with giggles in between.
“Who are you?” Jin seriously asked.
“This is good. This is what they call ‘serendipitous’. Look that up in the dictionary and you’ll see a picture of you and me. Thank you.” He giggled continuously as he sat up and took off his oxygen mask.

Hideaki couldn’t stop himself from laughing. He found it funny how an angel like Jin would fall for his doctor.

“You ready to deal? Because I can answer all your questions, friend.” He added as he stood up from his bed.

--

In a nearby diner, Jin sat in front of Hideaki as he watched him receive 3 full meal plates that Hideaki ordered to eat.

“How’s your French toast this evening?” Hideaki asked the waiter.
“Fabulous.” The waiter replied.
“Well… Set me up…” He ordered.

Hideaki took a bite of one of the meals he ordered. He complimented how good it was, chewing slowly as he cherished the tastes of every bit of it.

“Guess I have to introduce myself. “ He said extending his right arm.

Jin didn’t know what to do. He haven’t shook hands with anyone at all.

“Come on, give me your hand.” Hideaki told Jin.

Jin lifted his hands and placed it in the other man’s hands.

“There you go. A little tighter… tighter… There you go.” He instructed him.

Jin suddenly gripped too tight on his new friend’s hand causing him to say “No… That’s too much.”

Jin then lightly gripped his friend’s hand just the way it should be.

“Hideaki Takizawa… Handsome, hedonist, former celestial body, recent addition to the human race.” Hideaki introduced himself.
“I don’t believe you.” Jin replied with a smile on his face.
“You want proof? You hang out at a library… You can speak every language… You travel with the speed of thought…” He said out loud.

Then he added in his thought “… and you’re reading my mind right now.” Which Jin could hear.

“Stop that.” Jin replied
“You’re doing it.” Hideaki replied with a ridiculous smile.
“It’s impossible.”
“Some things are true whether you believe them or not.”
“How?”
“You choose”
“Choose?”
“To Fall to earth… you take the plunge, the tumble, the dive… You jump off a bridge, leap out a window… You just make up your mind to do it and you do it.”

Jin was fascinated on what Hideaki said. It made him think to do such act. It was interesting for him to try.

“You wake up smelly and aching from head to toe… and hungrier than you ever been in your life… only you have no idea what hunger is or any of that stuff… so it’s all real confusing and painful, but very, very good. ” He further explained.

Jin was pretty amazed and interested that all he could say was “Human.”

“Listen, kid… He gave these bozos the greatest gift in the universe. You think He didn’t give it to us too?” Hideaki continued his lecture as he munched on his huge order of food.
“Which gift?” Jin asked in confusion.
“Free will, Brother… Free will” He answered with emphasis

--

After paying a huge amount for the meal, Hideaki and Jin went off to a nearby construction site and sat on the edge of the horizontal metal bar that was hanging few floors above the ground.

“I couldn’t get a job… no past, no training, No I.D. then one day, I was walking passed a building site… And I thought ‘I could do that’… You see these people down here a lot of them are afraid of heights, you know what I’m saying. That makes me uniquely qualified. And besides, it feels like a little bit home up here... and I like what I do… I’m good at it.” Hideaki told Jin as he talked about his life.

Hideaki-senpai smoked a cigarette to warm himself. Jin was sitting beside him curious on what his senpai was doing. He raised his hand, trying to get the cigar but Hideaki hit his hand saying “These things will kill you.” Giving him a wink.

“Are there others? Others like you?” Jin asked pertaining to humans that were celestial bodies before.
“Yeah… They’re out there… You see them but most of the time you just walk on by. Nobody likes to think of the old life… You know, what they gave up.” He answered.
“Then why’d you do it?”

Hideaki gave him a smile, took out his wallet with bunch of family pictures, showed it and told Jin their names. He then stopped at one picture gave out a big sigh and said “and this is my wife…”

“Did you tell her who you were?” Jin asked
“I started to try once or twice, Then I thought ‘why do that to her?’” Hideaki explained
“Do what?”
“It’s too much for them. People don’t believe in us anymore.”

Hideaki took a puff on his cigar thinking of his days as an angel and comparing it to who he was that time. He then remembered one thing that he wouldn’t forget doing when he was like Jin.

“Do they still gather together at sunrise?” Hideaki asked.
“And sunset… Yes.” Jin replied.
“Take me there.” Hideaki requested.

--

Jin brought Hideaki on the beach where all the angels gather and stood there to watch the sunrise.

“Can you hear it?” Jin asked pertaining to an angelic music playing as the sunrise.
“No.” He replied with teary eyes.

Hideaki couldn’t erase the fact that he missed what he used to do. He missed reading people’s mind, observing them, hanging out at the library and picking up people. He missed everything.

Jin closed his eyes concentrating on the pleasing music he was hearing. After the sun rose, all the angels walked away and got back to their usual business. As Jin opened his eyes, he heard Hideaki shout “I can’t hear that but you can’t feel this.” as he took off all his clothing and went directly to the beach to swim.

“Hideaki!” Jin shouted.

Jin swam to the beach to get Hideaki. But the older male refuses to go.

“You have to go back.” Jin insistently said.
“Not until I catch a big wave.” He replied.

Hideaki laughed as he watched the big wave approaching. He asked Jin to wait for the wave to approach them and after which he commanded Jin to swim with the wave. It was a pretty good feeling to Hideaki as the waves hit them hard.
