Chapter 2:

“Have you ever been seen, Yamapi?” Jin asked.

They were both inside a convenient store, late at night, still doing their job. They walked around the said store as they chatted and observed the humans.

“You’re looking at me.” Yamapi replied with a smile on his face.
“No. Not by me and by the dying or by the delirious… Have you ever been seen like you were a man?”
“In a diner once… A blind woman turned to me all of a sudden and asked me to pass her the mustard.”

Jin shook his head and replied “But… She was blind.”

Yamapi looked at him and answered “Ahhh… but she knew I was there.”

As they walk past the refrigerator, their conversation continued.

“That doctor in the operating room, she looked right at me. “ Jin said.
“She didn’t see you, Jin. She can’t see you… No one can see you unless you want them to.” Yamapi replied and explained.
“And if I want her to?”

Yamapi stopped walking and looked at his friend once more and asked “Why do you want her to?”

Jin took a moment to think. “Why would I want her to see me?” he thought. He paused for few more seconds and answered “To help her.”

Right after he said those words, they heard a man shouting “Open… open it now.” as the robber pointed his gun on the head of the cashier.

Everyone in the store screamed in terror and got down to the floor from fear of getting shot. Jin and Yamapi slowly walk closer to the cashier and the robber. They could everyone’s thoughts in the store how they regret being there and how they should have done this and that instead.

“Do it! Put the money in the bag! Do it!” The robber screamed in demand.
“I’m doing it… I’m doing it!” The cashier replied as he placed all the money in the cash register into the bag.

Jin held the cashier’s shoulder while Yamapi held the robber’s shoulder. They were both listening to their thought as that scenario happens.

“I never saw the grand canyon… I might never see my grandkids again…” The cashier thought.
“What am I doing? Be cool… Be cool…” The robber thought as he sweat badly from nervousness.

The cashier slowly handed out a bag full of money and said “Be cool, man… Be cool…”

The man lowered his gun, suddenly grabbed the bag and hurriedly ran off. The cashier took a deep sigh of relief. Hooray! He was alive and unharmed.

Yamapi smiled at his friend, looked at him straight in the eye and said “They don’t need to see us.”

Next day, Kazuya arrived an hour early for her scheduled operation. She stood in front of the hospital bed where Mr. Kobayashi, her previous patient, died. She looked at it for few more minutes trying to remember everything that happened before she rushed herself to the comfort room to vomit.

As she went out of the comfort room, she saw her staffs putting away all the equipments needed for the operation.

“What’s going on?” She asked her co-doctor who was waiting for her.
“Ueda was looking for you, Kazuya” He answered pointing out at the surgeon in the other operating room.

She was not sure why he was looking for her. But she doesn’t care. After all, She should be having the operation right now.

“What’s going on? I have a mitral valve to do?” She question Ueda.
“They cancelled it.” He replied.
“Who cancelled it?”
“Johnny-san.”
“Why are you telling me?”
“He was busy.”

Kazuya shook her head in dismay and replied “No. He isn’t.”

Ueda took a good look at her, took a deep sigh and said “Kazuya, You’re sick.”

“I’m not sick.” Kazuya answered in a loud voice.

Ueda led her to the empty operating room and said “You’re sick and you can’t operate.”

“No, I’m not!” She insisted.
“They’ve rescheduled it for Monday. It’s an elective valve, no big deal.”
“It’s unprofessional and it embarrasses me in front of my staff.” She replied in whisper.

Kazuya walks toward the operating table and leans on it, and without them knowing, Jin was also there watching and listening to their argument.

“The death of Mr. Kobayashi wasn’t your fault.” He reassured.
“I know.”Kazuya replied with confidence.
“Then, what’s the problem?”

Kazuya started to shake her head and replied “I don’t know.”

“Kazuya, you put a terrific fight.”
“Yeah…. We fight for people’s lives, right?”

Ueda nodded his head in agreement.

Kazuya looked at Ueda straight in the eyes and asked “Don’t you ever wonder who is it we’re fighting with?”

She felt uncomfortable talking to anyone that time. She was confused and tired. She can’t handle their conversation anymore.

“I’m crazy and I’m chemically imbalanced.” She said as an excuse.
“You’re tired.” Ueda insisted.
“I said I’m not!”
“Why didn’t you call me?”

Jin, who in the background, stepped back and looked at Ueda in shock. “Kazuya and that guy are in a relationship?” he thought.

“Because I never sleep when you stay over.” She explained.
“You never sleep whether I stay or not.” Ueda answered back.

Kazuya shuts her mouth. She knew that Ueda was right in any way she looked at it.

“You’re good and you know it. Come back here on Monday and get back on the horse.” Ueda told and reassured her as he kissed her hand and leave her there.

Jin moved in closer to Kazuya looking at her face to face. He was trying to understand her feelings but he can’t. He doesn’t have such thing as feelings or so he thought.

--

11:23 PM, A night before her patient, Hideaki Takizawa, goes under operation, she planned to stop over by her patient’s room to check up on him and get his vitals. She took the patient’s chart and slowly walked to his room.

To her surprise, she saw a man standing outside the room of her patient. “A visitor at this time?” She thought.

She went closer to the room and called the man’s attention.

“Excuse me.” She said.

The man turned around, it was Jin. Kazuya became speechless. He was the most handsome guy she had ever seen. She didn’t know what to say except the question “Are you a visitor?”

Jin smiled at her and replied “Yes.”

“Well… Visiting hours has been over since 8:00.” She explained.
“Why do they have that?”
“Have what?”
“Hours… Doesn’t it help the patient to be visited?” He questioned her.

Kazuya remained speechless for a moment and then questioned “Who are you visiting? Takizawa-san?”

“Right now?” He asked.

Kazuya couldn’t help herself but stare at the creature. She nodded her headed as a yes answer to him.

He moved a little closer and replied “You… I’m visiting You.”

She started to get confused. “Why is this guy visiting me? I don’t even know him.” She thought.

“I don’t need a visitor.” She answered.
“You’re not ill?” He asked.
“No… I’m one of the doctors here.”
“Are you in despair?”

She looked at him straight in the eye and answered “I lost a patient.”

“You did everything you could?” He questioned.
“I was holding his heart in my hands when he died.” Kazuya explained.
“Then he wasn’t alone.”
“Yes, he was.”
“People die.”
“Not on my table.” She replied as she shook her head.
“People die when their bodies give out.”
“It’s my job to keep their bodies from giving out… Or what am I doing here?”
“It wasn’t your fault, Kazuya.”
“I wanted him to live.”
“He is living. Just not the way you think.”

Kazuya shook her head in disapproval as she replied “I don’t believe in that.”

Jin moved to her a little closer and explained “Some things are true whether you believe in them or not.”

Still puzzled by his words, Kazuya changed the topic and asked him “How did you know my name?”

Jin slowly pointed at Kazuya’s I.D.. Kazuya immediately covered her I.D. thinking “Well, duh!? That’s obvious! How stupid of me?!?”

“What’s yours?” Kazuya asked him.
“Jin.” He answered with a smile.

She repeated his name and tried to remember it. She flashes him a big smile and said “You better get out of here, Jin… Or securities might think that you’re a Psych patient.”

Jin smiled at her and she smiled back, waved goodbye and started to walk away.

Jin’s smile started to vanish from his face as she leaves. Kazuya, on the other hand, kept the smile as she walked away from him.

After taking few steps, she turned her back to see him for the last time before she headed to their locker room to change and call it a night, but all she saw was an empty corridor. She tried to look back several times as she walked away but saw nothing, he disappeared.

--

Inside the doctor’s locker room, Kazuya started changing her attire. She removed her I.D. and looked at it and to her surprise, her name wasn’t on the I.D.. The only thing you can see on it was her picture, and the First letter of her first name and her surname (K. Kamenashi, M.D.).

She tried to think how Jin knew her name. “But who cares?” she thought as she slowly showed a smile on her face.
