Got a day ahead somehow with NaNoWriMo. Instead of trying to capitalize on my good fortune, I've been spending my day looking up what dogs my characters would be if they were dogs. I thought I'd share my findings with you, to add some value to these hours.
Huxley Brown - Shiba Inu
[She turned and punched him square in the jaw. "Don't be an idiot," she seethed as he staggered back, a hand to his face. "Don't make this mistake."]
[Huxley found herself staring off into space regularly throughout the day. It was partially due to the tedious nature of the homework, and partially due to the fact that she was stuck doing it when she could be out solving murders and protecting the innocent from the demon horde.]
Bentley Smith - Collie
[But one of Bentley's most infuriating traits was his eagerness to overachieve; he was never content with just meeting the requirements for a passing grade.]
[Bentley had grown up in an establishment that shuttered him and cut him down when he aspired to be more.]
Derring Bold - Golden Retriever
[Derring, for his size and carefree attitude, was surprising adept at silently stalking and cutting down a target with his small concealed blades.]
[He was a big guy, but when he felt uncertain about anything, he tended to look like a puppy who knew he was about to be hit on the nose.]
Piper Blackpool - anything small and angry
[The only time Piper had ever beaten him in a match was last year at the Mage's Brawl when he had scraped third and she took second. Piper was small and tough, and acted like the whole world held it against her, so it could have just as easily been that she hated everyone.]
Faris Strange - Irish Wolfhound
[His voice was calm and collected, but rarely was he anything but. His body was crippled but his soul wasn't, and he tried to be that beacon of optimism to everyone.]
[Behind Faris, who was probably acting as a human shield, his older brother Kaeden hunched angrily against the wall. The two men could not have been any different in appearance and temperament; while Faris was collected and analytical, Kaeden was a hot-headed fireball with hair red enough to prove it.]
Kaeden Westlake - Irish Terrier
["Shut up, Westlake," he said softly. "Be a gracious host. It's not like you don't have other places you could stay at tonight."]
["Kaeden!" Carmichael exploded. "Please shut up!"]
Allan Carmichael - German Shepard
[At their immediate left, seated on the arm of the couch under the front window, the man he had known as Professor Allan Carmichael. He was less than twenty years their senior, but Bentley had left him a much younger man. Now, he seemed prematurely bent by worry, and a black eye patch over his left eye stood out under the blonde bangs.]
Dover Trueman - Great Dane
[Dover Trueman, as he had been known to his professors in his day, was a few years shy of fifty and a few pounds shy of fit. He'd been Minister for almost as long as Huxley had been attending, and while he maintained the lofty and reserved carriage necessary of a leader, he was cheery and even-tempered in person.]
Daniel "Doc" St. John - Brittany Spaniel
Um, haven't met him yet, but this is from something else:
[The third time Trueman excused himself from the dinner table, the doctor watched him go. He waited a few heartbeats, then stood and followed suit. The other Knights at the party gave him concerned looks, but he waved away their worries with a smile, and wondered when he'd become such an easy liar.]
There are more characters (I made a spread sheet and there's like over thirty named characters), but these were the easiest to find in dog form.
The story is called Epoch, because there was "the way things were" and "the way things are" and the event that marked the change was horrifically violent. And it was Bentley's fault. The story is set in the "now," and it's about Huxley trying to deal with his return, because they'd been super!close when he'd betrayed them all. It's a drama/angst/fantasy/action epic about second chances.
