Binary Schminary

So, as you may or may not be aware (or care, for that matter), the Senate is wasting time this week debating a Federal Marriage Amendment that would define marriage as being only between a man and a woman. It has no chance of getting a simple majority, let alone the supermajority necessary to be proposed to the states for ratification. Nonetheless, something apparently had to be done to sucker "values voters" into voting Republican again this November.

I'm sure no one would be shocked that I think it's a horrible idea for the obvious reasons. But there was an issue I had not really considered that I ran across this morning -- the effect of the amendment on individuals who are intersexed. It's an interesting problem that apparently no one is Congress is giving any attention to, probably because it makes them uncomfortable to think about. Not that I'm throwing stones here, because frankly if I had a kid born that was intersexed I'd be pretty perplexed as to what to do, and I'm sure the issue is something these individuals deal with everyday. Anyway, if you're more interested in the subject, there are some articles about it here and here (this one has a bit more background on what intersexed actually means).
