I've been messing about with this story for quite some time now, so I thought I post it and see what people think.
“DNA is everything,”
Ninomiya Kazunari wondered if Dr Kagura Ryuhei knew what he was talking about when he said those famous words. That slogan had been the hot topic for centuries after the top scientist in DNA analysis declared it to the world, making DNA research the most funded project. Now, hundreds of years later, scientists like Dr Kagura have discovered that everything a person is, it’s because of their genes. One tiny sample was all they need to know everything about you.
Nino switched off the television, disgusted at the company in charged of this whole ‘DNA is everything’ thing. Thanks to Dr Kagura, the government now has a good excuse to control its citizens’ lives, dictating their jobs, their hobbies and their families, all in the name of doing what’s best for the country.
Everybody in the country was sent a letter when they turned eighteen. On it, the name of the person you are supposed to spend the rest of your life with. Everybody knows that this has nothing to do with love. It is just a calculated way of determining which combination of citizens would allow for the greatest "benefit to the nation", and to the government, that’s all they really care about.
“You ready?” asked Aiba Masaki in a soft voice, holding out his envelope. The white piece of paper was crumbled from weeks of being crushed by Aiba’s nervous hands. Being the older of the two, Aiba received his letter before Nino, but their pinky promise from years ago made him wait to open theirs together.
“What’s written on it won’t change no matter what we do,” replied Nino nonchalantly, “might as well do it quick,”
On the count of three, the two boys ripped their respective envelops open and glazed through its contents, not caring about the details that was written on it but rather the name that was printed near the bottom.
“Matsumoto Jun,” announced Aiba at last, a huge frown forming on his face at the thought of being paired with the school’s most stuck-up diva that ever existed, “What kind of rubbish is this? There must be some mistake, how could I possibly be compatible with that jerk?”
Aiba was left to yell in frustration as Nino re-read his letter, confused. He had never heard of a Sakurai Sho before, the person he was meant to be with for life didn’t go to their school.
“I am the M spouse,” said Nino, beginning to feel extremely nervous about his new life with this Sakurai Sho. In every couple that the government paired together, there will be an S spouse and an M spouse. The S spouse is the dominant one in the pair, the person in-charge of the relationship. The S spouse gets to dictate whatever the M spouse does. Nino had heard plenty of horror stories about how M spouses are used as slaves, be it physically or sexually, and it made him shudder at the possibility of him becoming another gossip.
“Me too!” added Aiba, now even more furious at the thought of having to obey every single one of that diva’s commands, “but first, let’s find out who this Sakurai Sho is,”
A quick Internet search later, Nino found a decent picture of his future husband and knew way too much about him for his liking. His partner is from an elite family with a father in politics and his mother an heiress. Not to mention he is the School President of a respected school, the top student in his year and will be attending the prestigious Keio University. Overall, Sakurai Sho sounded like a prince and it made Nino dislike this relationship more and more.
The next few months go by painfully slow, but not as bad as the day of his wedding. Looking barely presentable, Nino made his way to the courthouse where he will officially sign his life away to a complete stranger.
Sitting between his parents, Nino kept his eyes on the ground, waiting for his name to be called. Occasionally, he would glance at his father to the left and his mother to the right, wondering if anybody actually believed the bullshit those scientists came up with. His parents were the best example of how flawed the system was. It was against the law to divorce one’s spouse, but there was nothing in the books about living apart. That was exactly what his parents were doing right now. Hated was an understatement, they simply loathed each other to the point that all Nino remembered about his childhood was his father’s yells and his mother’s cries.
“Ninomiya Kazunari,” a voice called his name.

PS: The title of this fic is actually a joke. For the non-scientists, DNA Helicase is an enzyme responsible for unraveling DNA strands during DNA replication. Get it? It unzips your genes (jeans).
