Rating: pg:13? I think there is one or two curse words.
Title: Afterwards
Characters: Jason Todd, Stephanie Brown Aka Spoiler
Summary: On a lonely street two ex-heroes meet.

Afterwards

A flickering streetlamp on an old abandoned street- Once. Twice. And it was out.

Two figures walk along the street casually despite their manner of dress. One is clad in an eggplant cloak, another in some strange combination of casual clothing and costume, the most distinctive part being the jagged red eyemask. The two spoke to one another in a strange manner that was both familiar and not.

As they reached the end of the street both seemed to look at one another and know what came next- flying. Together they flew for a while, they remembered their city, they were guardians of the slums. For one night they remembered who they had been and were heroes once more.

It was only as dawn began to rise they sat on the roof of a building in that same abandoned street as before. That was when they continued the talk they had started before their evening escapades.

“Hypocrite.”

“Hypocrisy? Cognitive Dissonance- my faithful friend and foe.” Jason mockingly answered while miming an epic battle with his hands.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“ Don't try to make me make sense it will only hurt you. Then again maybe I want you to hurt”

Spoiler's face even covered was expressive, Jason supposed it was a Robin trait. She gave him a stare. Before shaking her head and sighing. Sighs like yawns seemed to be contagious and Jason found himself joining in. There was quiet city noises for a moment before Steph mused;

“ There should be like a sign or something 'back from the dead- but not to life.”

Jason chuckled darkly before replying;

“ I'll make the sign for you but I sure as hell won't be waving it.” He sat downon the ledge as he finished and as usual she followed suit. Lying arms splayed behind her on the asphalt rooftop just behind him.

“ You wouldn't need to.” she quickly replied.

“Why?” he asked.

With a casual wave of her hand she answered “because it would be tacky and in poor taste.”

“We were Robins, I figured poor taste was a given.” he muttered darkly fingering the lighter in his pocket.

“ Maybe for you, I had two awesome costumes, and my belt was shiny.” She said in a put on airy tone.

He turned to her all fire and righteous anger but words as cold as ice.

“ Quit it.”

“ I'll stop acting 'flighty and sarcastic' when you stop being all 'Dark and Angry.” Steph smiled as she mimed the words with her fingers. Following it with leaning in closer to where he sat on the roof.

“ Then we're going to be at this for awhile.” Jason answered- maybe, just maybe leaning a little closer to where she sat. The smile faded a moment and he held her gaze before saying the words one of them always spoke before the costumes were put away again.

“So going back anytime soon?”

She shook her head and replied “No, you?”

“No.”

They knew why, they knew they couldn't because heroes didn't die.

But maybe legends can live on.

The sun was rising higher and the haziness of morning was beginning to fade.

Standing up and dusting off the back of her cape Spoiler asked him simply;

“Next week?”

“Hmph, Do you really need to ask?” He said stretching his arms and reaching for the butt in his jacket.

Flicking the butt out of his hand she smiled at his look of discontent.

“They're going to catch us, eventually.” she smiled.

“Until then.” he replied in his unique combination of pleased and disgruntled.

The two gave a quick hug, enough to remind them of what that sort of contact felt like, but not enough to hold onto. They had things to do and legends aren't afraid of the light. They would grow brighter and better than before until even the darkest of shadows shone.

They would not go out quietly-

“get a real costume next time- Jerk.” Stephanie said reaching out and tugging his leather jacket.

“If you hate my costume why don't you make me a 'real' one?” Jason snarked back.

“If I do it will be purple... with pink floral accents and black lace.”

“Mm, my favourite.” he said slowly moving his tongue over his lips and standing provocatively.

“Ha. Nothing but the best for my friends.” Spoiler's laugh was sharp and bright as she clapped her hand to his shoulder, hands shaking with the first laugh's friends held barely in check.

“Good thing about that.” He said pulling away from her.

“Sure, whatever. “ she said as her hand dug tighter into his shoulder- just this side of being painful.

“Weren't we headed our seperate ways.” he muttered.

“yeah, but as you may just recall- my shitty apartment is just above your shitty apartment.”

Steph replied matter of fact.

“strange coincidence that.” Jason said as his hand absently snaked her waist.

Even if maybe they sometimes should.
