Bush, Congress quietly slash key grants for college
November 22nd, 2004 5:00 PM

A few weeks after young people stormed to the polls in record numbers and voted 54 percent to 45 percent against George Bush, the Republican-controlled Congress is fulfilling their fears. In voting Saturday, November 20, for a giant spending bill, lawmakers passed a little-noticed but sweeping reduction in federal student aid, one that will lay even more of the responsibility for paying for college on overworked parents and overwhelmed students.

On the chopping block is the Pell Grant, the nation’s largest federal student-aid program, which currently offers needy college students grants of between $400 and $4,050 a year. The grant’s purchasing power has declined steeply in the past 30 years, and it now pays for only a third of tuition at the average public university. Grants, however inadequate, are still the most crucial form of aid, because they don’t need to be paid back.

Studies show that young people from poor and disadvantaged families are reluctant to take on student loans, rightly fearing that they may not be able to complete school and repay the money. Grants, then, are the single most important tool we have to keep the doors of college open to all. But next year, over 90,000 young people, most from families making less than $40,000, stand to lose their Pell grants altogether, and with it their chance at getting a decent education and equal access to the job market.

Well folks...Did you ever think we'd see something like this from the Bush admistration? I was wondering how long it would take for Congress to gut college aid funds and grants...I knew it was just a matter of time. They are taking away money from students in need to pay for their college education. And where is all this money they've saved going? Well, I'll give you a hint...We have troops dying their everyday...The Pentagon has called for 10,000 more troops be sent to Iraq in the near future...Now, I understand that we are at war and that we can't just leave like some Democrats think...But how many more people have to die before Bush realizes that maybe this war isn't working out like he'd planned...

This just shows how eager Mr. Bush is to get more workers into the job market, and our economy back on it's feet...However, let's not forget that THE MILITARY will pay for your college education, and offers great opportunities...It seems that Dubya is putting these people in a pinch, either join HIS military and fight HIS war, or spend the rest of your life grilling frozen cow parts at Burger King because you can't afford a college education...

It doesn't make any sense...A growing number of jobs today are requiring college education. Most careers require some sort of degree, and this administration is taking that opportunity away from some of our students... It's just goes to show you Bush's, and most other Republican's agenda is as follows: "Let the Rich get Rich, and let the poor stay that way!"

Tell me what you think, I'd like to hear your thoughts...

Think for yourself, and Question Authority...Remember, you have the right as an American citizen (for how much longer, who knows) to question the ones who make your decisions for you, and if you are not satisfied with the answers you recieve from them, you can change that...You have the Power.
