He liked the lower zones. There were more things to see, more supplies to be found, and a distinct lack of an authoritative presence. All of the things an evil mastermind needed to thrive- but he would be the first to admit he probably looked a little out-of-place in his suit, so he had forgone it in favor of jeans and a t-shirt. His briefcase containing his Power Staff, however, he kept.

It was hard to miss the small crowd that was gathering, not to mention the flashing lights. He carefully picked his way past armored feet to the forefront of the gathering to get a better look.

Of all the things he'd seen- in this place and the other various universes he'd been to- this was new. The was loath to call whatever it was this boy was doing "magic". As a man of science, he struggled with a very concept, and flat-out denied it whenever he could. Still, he was intrigued, and set his communicator to record for later observation.

Maybe, if a lull in the action presented itself, he'd get a chance to talk with this kid.

All in all, Edward considered this to be no different than some of the things he'd do back around Amestris. Alchemy was supposed to be used to assist the people, after all. The people here were mostly just very big and metal.

It didn't mean that the boy wouldn't cater to the needs of humans, and he extended his services to repair any broken tools and things provided they weren't very technical. Edward still had some studying to do if he wanted to tackle something like that.

"Phew..." He wiped a sleeve across his brow, sighing as he waved off the latest repair. "Ah- sorry guys, I'm gonna take a little break here if you don't mind!" He grinned, then stepped back to sit for a while. "...heh. Not so bad for a start..."

After he was done here, the first thing he was going to do was grab something to eat. Rolling his shoulders, he glanced at whomever might be lingering.

The crowd dissipated, but he stuck around, looking the very picture of nonchalance.

"Quite the display," he remarked, stepping up to where the boy sat. He realized that, despite the lack of suit, the briefcase might make him look like a salesman of sorts- and that certainly wasn't his intention. He wasn't approaching this kid with an offer or a sales pitch- he just wanted to talk. "If you don't mind my asking... how did you do all of that?"

Salesman or not, having a briefcase just looked pretty odd, especially given the man's otherwise casual appearance. Edward remained wary out of habit, but the question wasn't anything he hadn't expected.

"Alchemy," he said, plain and simple. He watched carefully for the guy's reaction. Most of the people he'd mentioned it to were at least familiar with the term, if not the practice.

Putress had taken to walking the streets of the lower levels in order to assess the progress of his plague. It seemed to have entered a dormant stage; one in five samples he had taken were carriers. He quite looked forward to its second outbreak...

...but that was neither here nor there.

"I imagine I am beyond your skill, Edward Elric," the Forsaken commented. The harsh reek of chemicals, as always, preceded him, and the vision of ragged bone and decay left no mistake about what he meant.

It took him no more than a moment to put name to voice and...face, but seeing all these beings over a little screen was one thing, and meeting them in person was more often than not as he had come to find out around here, quite different.

"-Putress..." the boy blinked, then nodded towards the apothecary. He couldn't help but stare, the Forsaken's appearance more disturbing than frightening, stirring unwanted memories in his mind. Edward shook his head. "...sorry." That wasn't the best way to greet a person.

"I'll admit, I'm not really an expert for biologically-based alchemy anyway," he said, folding his arms. He'd studied it, certainly, but that too, brought up a sour memory. He pushed it away. "So, we finally meet."

"Indeed. You are providing demonstrations of your craft, I presume?" Putress didn't seem particularly offended by the stare; it was hardly unusual in this place. Still, the half-recognition there was something the apothecary noted for later.

"I guess you could call it that. Figured I should make use of it somehow, but I thought it would be better to do that somewhere that wasn't as conspicuous." Not that he had any doubts someone would find out sooner or later, but the young alchemist was one who knew well that risks had to be taken now and then, and his use of alchemy here wasn't all for show. He was learning too, the make-up of materials here, the subtle differences with things he'd easily identify back home.
