NOTES:  *s-sob*  Sorry for my absence, guys - RL actually managed to get worse on me the past two weeks, but I think it's showing signs of calming again...at least to previous level.  >,>;;;  Wanted to get this up while the time's still current.  Tags here will be kinda slow, and I'll get to the SHITTON of previous tags I owe hopefully by Monday or Tuesday.  orz

It had been two months since Wheeljack's . . . encounter . . . with the Megatron of his own Stream.  For the most part, he'd recovered - psychologically-speaking, since he'd actually not been hurt (well, except for the initial shot in the back from one of Screamer's null ray rifles, but...) - but he still found himself watching his back and jumping at shadows sometimes.  He knew that Megatron was keeping an eye on him.

Better him than his friends, though.  If it kept them safe . . .

He'd managed to keep his rift bridge project a secret, at least.  Even most of the other Autobots didn't know about it mostly just for fear of raising hopes only to fail in the endeavor.  Optimus Prime knew, of course - the older one, the one so like his own.  It had been Prime who'd tasked him with it and helped him find a secluded warehouse to work in.  And his roommate Ratchet - he told Ratch everything.

Well, n-not . . . not everything.

Ratchet knew about the rift bridge for Prime.  He knew about the encounter with Megatron two months ago - he'd been there when the stressed and bleary engineer had finally stumbled home late that night, after he'd built the ultra-frequency emitter to free Megatron from his alt-mode after . . . frag, whichever Starscream it had been had shot him with his own Transfixatron.  Ratchet didn't know about the arrangement he'd been forced into - to protect himself as well as his loved ones.

During that encounter, Megatron had also made it clear that he wanted the engineer's service here in this city.  Wheeljack was no longer surrounded by his faction, not like he'd been back home, and Megatron had no qualms against continuing what Megadeath had started so long ago if it came down to it.  Terrified of disappearing in this city - into the same darkness and agony he'd once endured - and very possibly never being found again, Wheeljack had cautiously agreed to Megatron's "offer" to serve him, asserting that it depended on what Megatron wanted as to how well he'd cooperate.  The problem was, Megatron himself was no slouch at engineering and a few other sciences.  Anything Wheeljack tried - to do or to "fail" at - he'd have to be exceedingly careful.  But . . . he couldn't worry about that now.  He'd deal with that if the time came.

...w-when...the time came...?

He shook his head at himself.  He couldn't worry about that now.  He needed to stay present and alert.

He was in a back alley behind some factories in Zone 4, looking for bits and scraps he could use to build one of the parts he needed for the rift bridge.  He could have tried to buy one, but it was expensive and ran the risk of catching TransTech attention.  Couldn't have that!  He was in enough potential trouble as it was.  Ugh . . .

It'd been tens of thousands of vorns since he'd had to do this, swim through dumpsters looking for halfway usable parts, but the Chief Engineer of the Autobots wasn't above doing it again if it was necessary.  And he remembered how to keep his sensors tuned for approach so he wasn't surprised by someone walking up behind him while his head was down in the trash.

What he didn't account for . . . was someone sneaking up on him by other means.

((ooc: Mods, could we get a tag for DW!Warp?  8D  Thanks!))
