For Dirk__Gently: Secrets

Jul 13, 2006 05:52

Today is a day that's been coming a long time. There are things that Noodle has been avoiding, things that she has managed to keep to herself for quite some time. Things that she won't share with Murdoc, with D, or with Russell. At least, not just yet. But she needs help, too - an impartial third party to help track things down, to find ( Read more... )

Dirk would love the ego boost if he knew he's actually well thought of in the Nexus, but his methods of bizarre logic actually work better here than in his own world. If she's never met him before, he's a laughable rather than impressive figure. She asked for a professional detective. What she gets is a very short, very round man with no fashion sense. His hideous shirt/tie combination is topped by a hat that makes him look like a squat bedside lamp. He also walks with a kind of strutting waddle. This man screams to be made fun of.
He adjusts his glasses and peers at her a little. He's not impressed either. Check scrap of paper. "Miss... er. Noodle?"

Noodle is not too much to be seeing either! she's short, and on the anorexic side of scrawny, with arms and legs that are oddly out of proportion with her frame. Today's 'casual day', so she's wearing something relaxing, just a T-shirt and jeans combo.

"No Miss, is just Noodle. Is nice to be meeting you, Mister Gently. You come highly reccomended."

He didn't, actually - but you're supposed to say things like that at the start. She gives the detective a wide, wide grin, and then continues.

"Would be alright to ask about your background before going further?"

*Shoves the paper in a pocket and offers a handshake* Of course. I'm honored you came to me first. Background? Ah, well, my methods are of a holistic nature, following the theory of the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. As a Holistic Private Detective I provide a service that is unique in this world; I do not concern myself with such petty details as fingerprints, footprints, forensics, or fashionably bloody gloves. The solution to every problem is detectable in the pattern and web of the whole. The connections between causes and effects are often much more subtle and complex than we can easily understand when distracted by the details of the physical world. Take the butterfly effect for an example. A rather simplistic but functional illustration of what is only the tip of the iceberg over the greater web of reality, where the warp and the woof are so elegantly interwoven that the breaking of a single thread may effectively distort the weave in a far corner... *She might have to kick him in the shins just to get him to ( ... )

Noodle's brain has not _quite_ leaked out her ears as of yet. She is, however, regretting greatly that she asked. Hands go to the sides of her hat, holding onto it and trying very hard not to do said kicking to the shins.

It's a close thing, though.

"Would appreciate short version!"

Eesh.

Whatever Dirk's idea of punctual is, it definitely doesn't involve showing up before noon. He strolls in the next afternoon with a battered leather folder and a styrofoam cup of coffee. To his credit, he really was up later than usual doing genuine research. "Morning. Contracts and plane tickets, only coach, as I assume you would desire the most moderate of accomodations to ease the impact of such expenses upon your invoice." He waves the folder at her.

"Is not morning, but still ok. Had late night thinking things over."

Noodle looks a little sleepy herself - staying up late and getting up early is never a bad thing, but can sometimes mean she's a little slow on the uptake. She's got something heavily caffinated in a glass, drinking it quickly and then setting it aside.

"So we starting so soon? Is good - will be long trip. Is possible to upgrade for long flight? Willing to pay for it for your comfort if not just mine. More room to work through contracts, too."

Cagey - she doubts coach seating for many many hours would be fun for Dirk - she'd probably tolerate it, but being able to stretch out would be good.

Dirk is used to coach, but he's always happy to upgrade on other people's money. "I did try to get us on as expiditious a flight as possible. We leave very late tonight, unless that's inconvenient for you? Booking on short notice is, regrettably, an expense in and of itself. But no expenditure should be too high, no span too far to travel, in the pursuit of answers..." He frowns, feeling that this speech is not up to his usual standards. Clearly he needs more coffee. Usually he prefers tea, but it really was a long night. Dirk plunks down with his folder and spreads out the flight confirmations and the contract he's made up to prevent her from going into the PI business. It's neatly typed on the computer and everything, and full of big words, but it basically comes down to her agreeing by signing it to not practice the holistic detective schtick in either his world or the Nexus, except if it's just for her own purpose. How you can put a copyright on a method of investigation is a mystery, but if anyone can word it right, it's Dirk. " ( ... )

"Is good to keep protecting what makes you you. Is okay."

She'll go through it once just to make sure there's no 'permanently hire Dirk on for gobs of money' clause, and let the rest go. She makes a mental note to try the 'I'm a rock star, can I please sit up front' with her credit card once they get to the gate. If the contracts are as big as Dirk's talking as, it may take her many many hours to go through it.

"What is oddest case you had to deal with, Dirk?"
