i love her in Friends and all but truth be told her movie efforts have so far been dismal.

until this one.

maybe it's the unusual storyline adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Jeffrey Eugenides (of The Virgin Suicides & Middlesex fame) or the stellar supporting chops from Justin "Arrested Development" Bateman. In his understated portrayal of a chronic commitment-phobe who accidentally (or subconsciously) trades his sperm for his soon-to-be impregnated singlemom best friend's donor's which ends up in a lovely but equally neurotic son he discovers 7 years later (played precociously by adorable newcomer, Thomas Robinson).

what moved was the whole father-son rapport involving shared idiosyncracies and picture frames, without giving too much away. Also worthy mention is Patrick Wilson delivering his comic teethy himbo best. if anything, this is a novel take on the unconventional family unit without any overt political leanings on the issue.

at best it's a new york-quirky presentation of love and family relationships, only marred by a conveniently abrupt and harried ending.
