An Open Letter to Dr TSM et al.

Dear Madam

I am rather baffled by your dogged interest in trying to rid our education system of AWARE's CSE programme.

At this point of your golden years, shouldn't you be looking into more constructive projects which will gratify your remaining time on earth? Like knitting booties and mitts for your grandchildren, making wonderful meals for your working children, or if you feel empowered, provide pro-bono legal advice to the down-and-out, as part of your christianly goals in life? My mother is about your age and her days are spent taking care of her health, hanging with her grandkids and the occasional golf and spa. Maybe I should hook you two up soon. Don't worry, it'll be a healthy, god-fearing heterosexual friendship. You two can even trade recipes in between studying the bible page to page.

You see, what I can't fathom most is, why take such an obsessive interest in the homosexuals in our country? Are they the reason we are plagued with pandemics, wrecked with economic challenges, or even that we can't get a seat in the MRT because of the influx of foreign talent? Do you think these homosexuals will worsen the violence of war and terrorism? Or maybe it's the homosexuals who may, gasp, run the country some day and worse, encourage marriage and love and raising children in an environment of acceptance? My, that would be a national catastrophe wouldn't it?

Or perhaps because you feel remissed that your own children have not contributed to the country's population, have not added more mini-Thios to society and you feel the need to atone for that shortcoming by trying to ensure the rest of the future generation somehow has your righteous DNA imprinted in our school syllabus?

I really don't know what you want, although it does trouble me. My only advise to you is, find another mission, possibly elsewhere. Because god (whoever you wish to worship) only knows what battles we choose and our true intentions for them.

All I'm really certain about is that I have two children biologically birthed and I raised them with the fundamental values of love, tolerance and consideration. Somedays I even add a little anecdote of my past failings to teach them to avoid those, too. I am in a monogamous relationship with someone whom I care deeply about and I plan to commit this to posterity, since I've already done that once and it didn't work out. Because I believe we can hurt and love anyone, gay or straight. It's really not about our sexuality, is it? It's about our basic values of decency and loyalty.

And yes, I am a mother. and I'm gay.
