I've always heard that people change from when they graduate high school to when they go to college. In college, things are different. Yes you have responsiblities and have to get yourself to class on time and what not, but your parents aren't there to tell you what to do. They aren't there to monitor your behavior and the people you are hanging out with.
Maybe we need something like that in college.
Yes drinking is a big thing in high school too. I did it. My friends did it. But we did other things too. And when we would do to parties in high school we wouldn't drink outselves into drunken stupors. Well, a few people did. I'm talking about in general here.
Now, I'm in college. And I go to ECU. Which is a huge party school. But yet, I'm not an alcoholic. And I feel like some of my friends are.
There are the friends that probably drank too much in high school and are continuing that pattern in college. The friends who, the only time that I hear from them are when they are at some random party, completely wasted and feel the need to call friends. There are the friends who didn't drink much in high school. You know, the ones who got drunk after having one beer. Maybe two. And now they go out basically everything and get as drunk as they can. And you can't foget the friends who have ended up in the hospital after nights of too much drinking.
When I think about my individual friends and how they are now, I see a few future alcoholics. And it's sad. They don't see a problem of course. I don't know.
I'm not even trying to say that there haven't been nights that I drank too much. I'm aware that there are. But they are few and far between. I'm not one of those girls who goes out Thursday, Friday and Saturday and drinks so much that all they can do the next day is sleep. Sleep until it's time to get ready to go out again.
I just think it's kind of sad. There's more to college than being drunk 24/7.
