Farewell HP movies and hello fic, you're quite awesome, aren't you?
I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II today with my parents (free movie, free coffee afterwards yay). We went to a 9am screening and it was blissfully quiet. It's too early to get up on a Sunday but there is something to be said for my Dad's theory about early morning movie screenings.
Disclaimer: I've read the book once, when it came out, so my canon knowledge is a bit hairy - only helped by talking to my Mum post-movie, who has read the book far more recently than I (and randomly is a total Snape/Lily 'shipper).
Overall: I liked it, probably more than I thought I would, as I was a bit eh about DH1. (I went back to check what I actually wrote about Part 1`but it turns out I didn't even post about it. Well. Yes. I didn't think I was quite that apathetic but anyway, no thoughts recorded). But I would really like to watch them together, or at least maybe watch DH1 again.
I was a little surprised at how much they cut. I mean, they cast someone as Grindewald, right? (The dude Bonnie Wright is dating?) They cut it all? For a while there I thought I'd gotten confused and it was in the first part, but nope, just not there. I get it in a way, if they'd committed to it, it would have taken quite a lot of screen-time, but I think it should have been nodded to more than it was. Dumbledore comes off slightly better than he should all things considered.
Also, they totally changed the R/H kiss, didn't they? I still liked it, but I preferred the book's version and there is a section of the internet that is not very happy right now, isn't there?
One change I loved: Neville/Luna movie canon! <3 I adore Luna so very, very much, and Neville was a BAMF (as he should be). Love.
Started tearing up about well, where I was always going to, with Fred. Fuck. :( Also with James, Lily, Sirius and Remus and Harry quietly going to his "death." Not so much after that. My Mum apparently cried though Snape/Lily. I thought it was nicely done (ickle!Snape was cute actually) but too much fic ruined any sort of Snape/Lily storyline for me quite some time ago. Sad, but true.
Emma, Dan and Rupert were all on the whole great. Dan especially, but then he had the bulk of the movie to handle. The right amount of determination, and moments of self-doubt and just, Harry <3 It was a little Trio moment light tbh - the first half was definitely better in that regard - but I liked how it ended with them at the end, because well, it couldn't and shouldn't have any other way (not including the Epilogue because well, it's an Epilogue in my mind not an ending).
Oh hi there random Hagrid! Oh hi there random mention of Lupin's son! ;)
Julie Walters' delivery on 'not my daughter, you bitch' and the subsequent battle (of sorts) was awesome.
McGonagall's "I've always wanted to use that spell" was delightful. As was she.
Dean Dean Dean, hi there. You've grown up well, sir.
Epilogue: oh that wasn't as bad as I thought. I mean, I still don't like it in the book, and oh god Albus Severus that poor kid, but it wasn't that bad. They really just gave Emma a scarf to "age" her though, didn't they? Heh.
I did think the movie was beautifully shot though and the special effects were awesome. The 3D version I saw was unnecessary, but eh.

I saw a preview for Real Steel before the movie, and it looks vaguely ridiculous, but oh hi there Hugh Jackman. I forgot how goood you can look.
I also saw another one for the Planet of the Apes prequel: still ridiculous. Potentially amusing, but I think I have Franco issues.
No Batman teaser for NZ. Not surprised, just :(
Oh I just got completely distracted by this fic: Carpe Brewski by gyzym. Charles/Erik, X Men First Class Frat Boy AU. Yes, really. It's amazing. Raven is perfect and Logan is hilarious. One warning: WIP. So uh, beware of that. I'll just be uh, tracking the tag.
Add this to reading Peter/Olivia fic on AO3 last night, and it's the most fic I've read in quite a while except for the occasional link on Tumblr. I've missed it. <3
