C'est ainsi que j'ai abandonné à l'âge de six ans un e magnifique carrière de peintre. J'avais été découragé par l'insuccès de mon dessin numéro 1 et de mon dessin numéro 2. Wonderful, wonderful quote from a marvellous book. When I was growing up in France the whole class would memorise passages from it for parent presentation evenings, and each one of us would quote a paragraph...
I've got so many fond memories and well... it still makes me cry.

it sounds amazing! i'd be jealous of your French, but starting this book has really reminded me that there are moments of immense pleasure in learning another language, and also that it's an immense privilege to live in another culture- not everyone is afforded the opportunity :)

It's a wonderful book to read when starting out- I've forgotten so much since I moved to England but it's very simply and poignantly writen. And yes, the capability to learn about different cultures is a wonderful thing.

Go me and my ability to still mostly understand what's going on in a French sentence after 6 years of no practice and bastardising it with Russian!

I'll stop crowing about my greatness now... For a few seconds...
