Gnome vs nome

Courtesy of the New Oxford Dictionary of English, 1998, 2001:

gnome - a legendary dwarfish creature supposed to guard the earth's treasures underground; a small garden ornament in the form of a bearded man with a pointed hat; a small ugly person; a person regarded as having secret or sinister influence, especially in financial matters. mid 16th cent. from the French, from modern Latin gnomus. a word used as a synonym of Pygmaeus, denoting a mythical race of very small people said to inhabit parts of Ethipopia and India (i.e. the origin of pygmy obviously).

2 A short statement encapsulating a general truth, a maxim. late 16th cent.: from the Greek gnome 'thought, opinion', related to gignoskein 'know' (I didn't know that... now when my hubby comes out with his favourite 'you have just stated a truism' I can reply with 'I like to think of it as a gnome'...)

so no, in answer to Keletkezes, there is no connection; as much as we'd like to imagine the nomes being ruled by an underground nomarchy of evil bearded garden ornaments :)

"what a difference a G makes.... many more evil powers... what a difference a day makes... evil pygmy with flowers... bum-bum-bum-buuuumm!" (my own composition, see mood :p )
