the art of fake vectoring

Nov 14, 2006 22:56

for some weird reason people are wondering about the fake vectorish effect I used on some icons I made... therefore a quick recap of the effect...
the result is kinda like this
from a real photo.

well as it is with filter effects you'll need to do some fiddling and adjusting to suit your pic. plus it works best on clean studioshots that have a decent contrast but don't go over the top with the shadows. just saying...

this effect tries to imitate vector art. but it is by no means actual vector graphics we're doing. I'm not as patient/skilled/trained/talented/etc to try my hands on creating the real thing. plus kinda lazy here. *g*

also, we're not using the Cutout filter because frankly, the results with that one suck majorly.

the original pic

as mentioned before, try to use a clean studioshot. nice contrast but not too much dark shadows.
also, yes, I still like SMG. heee. plus I heart the quote on this pic. *g*
also the pic should be of a rather large resolution. this one here was 750x1023px...
snagged from smg_daily

the used filters

I'll show you only a part of the pic in its original resolution, so you can see what exactly I was aiming for when using the filters...

first I wanted to get rid of all the little details. so I had to blur, but with keeping the different color areas intact, so I had to use Filter - Blur - Smart Blur. for this the low quality works best. I went on full force ;) meaning I used Radius/Treshold both on 100%

now we have the ugly edge problem that using the Smart Blur filter tends to create. But luckily we can do something about this. it's actually one of my favorite filters. YAY! with Filter - Stylize - Diffuse on Anisotropic.
See how the artefacts are practically gone now?

still too many details here though. the pic needs to look more plain. depending on the original, the first step may already be enough though. but here I had to do the Filter - Blur - Smart Blur again. Radius/Treshold on 100/29 this time, we don't want to go over the top ;)

and again I got rid of the Smart Blur artefacts with the anisotropic diffuse filter...

almost done... time to use the ever popular Filter - Artistic - Poster Edges on a very low setting. Everything on 0 or 1, depending on the pic...

and guess what, we'll get rid of the little spots with the anisotropic diffuse filter...

the result and its sharpened little sister :)

composition

throw together a nice background. go for something that looks vectorish.
I came up with this because it had to be quick...

then I pasted the picture on top, resized it, positioned it and cut it out.

a little color work (actually just a colorful gradient on top on Screen mode, and the merged image on top on Soft Light mode to get a little more contrast) and we're done.

after resizing and sharpening...

and because it's kinda vectorish it's best saved as gif. small file size, yay!

that's it. if there are any questions feel free to ask.
and as always have fun! :)
