Who: Kurt and Burt
When:11/10 ½ hour before game
Where: Kurt’s dorm
What: A phone call to dad.

After all of the comments on his journal, the fight with Niki and then the horrible run-in with Dave Kurt was pretty sure that the world was against him. Everyone hated him, everyone expected him to have no fear and just get on that field no matter what. His hand rubbed over the spot that had long long ago faded. There was only one voice in the world he wanted to hear right now. “Please be home.” He whispered as the phone rang.

Picking up the phone as he walked in the door from work, Burt was surprised to see Kurt’s name on the caller ID. He hadn’t expected a call right now, “Hey buddy,” he greeted his son cheerfully. Any call from Kurt made his day brighter.

“Hey dad.” Kurt smiled, just a little, the voice of the man who always made the world better soothing him. “How are you doing?” He wondered if Burt would be able to tell his upset just from his voice.

Burt knew his son and while he did not understand him all the time, he could tell when the boy was upset, “What’s wrong?” he asked, automatically leaning forward, the tiny hairs on the back of his neck, prickling.

Kurt sighed, falling back on his bed with a small whumph. “Just people....” Even Kurt could hear the teenage angst in his voice.

“They giving you a hard time?” he asked. That had been a problem for Kurt at his old school.

“It’s not the people here... The team wrote... Some people have no manners.”

“Ain’t that the truth,” Burt agreed. “You know that old childhood rhyme though, sticks and stones. Whatever was said, they did it because they’re scared and want to scare you so you’re like them, bring you down to their level. Don’t let them do that to you Kurt, you’re a Hummel. You’re strong.”

Kurt bit down on his lower lip. “It’s hard... I couldn’t care less if they say I’m dumb. I know I’m not, or saying I sound like a girl. I sound better then they do... but... I am what they say. I’m … Dad I am a f... gay. I’m gay.”

Burt paused, that was unexpected. He knew his son was gay, but he hadn’t anticipated him saying it on the phone like that, “I know, Kurt,” he said with a slight twist of his lips, “I've known since you were three. All you wanted for your birthday was a pair of sensible heels. I guess I'm not totally in love with the idea, but, if that's who you are, there's nothing I can do about it. And I love you just as much. Ok?” He paused for a moment, “Thanks for telling me Kurt.”

Kurt’s eyes closed, a small sniffle coming up. “Thanks Dad...” He tried, but the tears were falling. He’d never realized what a weight his father’s love had been. “I...I need to go change for the game. I’ll see you at Thanksgiving alright?”

“Go win,” Burt agreed, “Can’t wait for you to come visit. I’m so proud of you.”
