Log: Jesse & Niki

Who: Niki & Jesse
When: Thursday, lunch?
Where: outside the dining hall
What:an impromptu concert

Grabbing his guitar after classes and wolfing down a quick lunch, Niki and Jesse headed outside, Niki slipping his guitar strap over his head. “So, what do you want to do first?” he asked. They had been talking about this impromptu concert for a few weeks or so, but hadn’t actually done it. Well, today, they were going to do it.

Jesse grinned as he slipped on his jacket - it was, after all, November. “Well, the way I figure it, Cowboy, you’ve got the guitar, you’re in the driver’s seat. I’ll follow your lead.”

“Say’s Mr. Broadway,” Niki snorted as he thought for a moment and began to play.

Jesse grinned as the first few chords sprang from Niki’s guitar. The song was a classic, and right in his wheelhouse on top of that. He closed his eyes and sang, losing himself in the performance as he did. It was the best feeling in the world, being able to shut out the audience and even his own doubts, and he had a brief moment of regret when the song came to an end. He looked over at Niki with a grin, not even listening to see whether they’d drawn anyone’s attention enough for them to applaud. “Nice choice,” he chuckled. “Figured you’d open with something more...country.”

“Not if you’re singing,” Niki replied. He liked rock and roll, but he was still a country boy. He liked his country a little harder though, “But I can if you want,” he decided, taking a song. He was sure Jesse could manage a duet.

It took him a few extra seconds to recognize the song, but Jesse smiled when he did. Niki had always had good taste in music. He let his friend start them off before joining in on the duet. About halfway through the song he pulled his jacket off again - he wasn’t dancing or anything, but he was definitely moving around a little, and he was starting to sweat. Once they’d hit the last note of the song, he took a look around - they’d definitely drawn a crowd, and they seemed appreciative of the performance.

“So,” he called over to Niki, “what do you figure? What’s up your sleeve for the knockout performance? Gotta send the crowd home happy, after all.”

Checking his watch, Niki nodded, they had time for one more. “Who has a suggestion?” he called to the audience, letting them call a few before he finally shook his head. Those suggestions wouldn’t do at all. “C’mere, Hairspray,” he called, wanting to do a private conference. “You got an idea?”

“Well - you’ve got a guitar, I’ve got a good voice - I think we’ll close with some Mellencamp. What do you figure?” Jesse grinned. “Do I even have to tell you what song?”

“Never!” Niki retorted, pleased. You couldn’t go wrong with Mellencamp!
