Log: Jason and Fio

Who: Fio and Jason
When: Monday
Where: The neighborhood
What: Halloween!

Halloween, the spookiest night of the year and one of Fio’s favorites. Everyone got to be someone new for a small time. The school let students got to wear their costumes and the night was going to be filled with festivities and candy. She was more than ready for all the fun and excitement for the night. Jason though, was not as usual. He still required her to practice as normal and do some practice of his own. Fio admittedly was antsy and trying her best to get through the song perfectly so they could go and get some candy.

“How did that sound?” She asked, glancing up from her flute and taking note of the sun setting out of the window.

Jason looked up from the score he was reviewing and shook his head. The piece was rushed and her playing was sloppy. It won’t do. “Again. This time, slow down,” he answered before busying himself with his own instrument.

Fio sighed softly and nodded as she closed her eyes and tried to relax. Hurrying was just going to do the opposite of what she wanted. Taking a deep breath, she began to play, doing much better than the previous time as she focused more on the instrument and less on what was waiting for when they finished practicing. Her fingers were getting better at the faster movements each time she practiced. Honestly, if anyone had told her that she’d ever be able to play anything like she was, Fio would’ve called them insane. “How’s that?”

“I suppose that will do for now.” Jason set the violin down. He could tell Fio wasn’t in the mood to practice. It showed in her music. It was lazy and disinterested. There was nothing he could do about it. Her mind was off somewhere and would likely remain there for the duration of the evening. There was no use trying to force her.

Fio smiled brightly and immediately began to take her flute apart to put back into the case. “Great! So, are you ready to go then?”

He swiftly packed up his violin and tucked his sheet music back in his binder. He stood up and shouldered the case. “Yes, I am.”

“Alright, so you’re gonna put your violin away and change then to meet me outside of the boys dorms?” She moved to walk beside him, almost skipping as she thought of all the fun to be had, playful haunted houses, candy, spending time together just the two of them without their instruments.

“Excuse me, what?” He didn’t remember making plans with her tonight.

“It’s Halloween, Jason. You’re coming with me right?” Fio hadn't talked about it. She had only assumed that the boy would be willing to go with her rather than let her go out alone. This way he couldn't get her to take someone else because of short notice.

“No, I’m not?” He’d rather spend the night in his room and practice or study, whichever struck his fancy.

“What?” She gave a surprised sort of look, despite knowing that this was probably going to be a little bit of a difficult thing to get him to do originally. “That means I’m gonna be out there alone... come on, come with me?” She stopped to face him, giving him a hopeful smile.

“I’d really rather not.” Jason shook his head as he walked past her.

“So, I’m gonna have to go out all alone...” Fio furrowed her brows and gave a disappointed look. “Or worse, miss Halloween all together. Please Jase?” It was sad that she was starting to know what sad faces got him to do what she wanted sometimes.

“There are others who’ll go. Ask Kurt. Or Dave.”

“Both of them can’t.” She offered quickly. “Kurt has French and Dave...is busy with his big.” Fio fought the urge to smile at her quick thinking. “Don’t you want to spend some time with me? I promise I’ll practice longer tomorrow if you do.” She wanted to spend time with him after all.

Jason was silent for awhile. He would not hear the end of this for awhile. It would probably better if he just said yes. He sighed, nodding, “fine.”

“Fantastic! Do you have a costume?” Immediately she was excited again, almost bouncing beside him. “I mean you wore the outfit to the masquerade, but I don't know if you want to wear something else.”

“I won’t be wearing one. I’ll only accompany you.”

She raised an eyebrow at that. “Jason.... that’s no fun. You have to do something that’s costume like or it just wont be fun. If you don't have anything. I’ll find something for you when I drop my flute off and meet you back here, alright?”

“If you must.” Jason shrugged. She’d probably do it anyway if he had said no.

Fio sighed at his lack of enthusiasm, but she wanted to spend the time with him. She wanted to see if he could like her too. “I’ll be back in like fifteen. Meet you here.” She said before hurrying towards her dorm room to search through her belongings and see if she could find anything that he could wear. The problem was that Fio was tiny, so nothing she owned was gonna fit clothing wise. Finally she came across something and smirked. Fio sent him a quick text to wear a white jacket as started out with item in hand.

A white jacket? What on earth was she up to? Jason pocketed his phone and pulled out his white jacket and put it on, just as Fio requested. He made his way back to their designated meeting place and waited for her to arrive, curious as to what she’ll bring this time.

Fio was grinning as she hurried towards him. Before he had a chance to say a word, Fio plopped the hat onto his head and grinned. “Perfect! Now you’re ready for Halloween.”

Quickly, Jason whipped the hat from his head and stared at it. “You want me to wear this?” It looked ridiculous! He looked ridiculous.

Fio smiled brightly and nodded. “You look cute! I think it makes for a perfect halloween costume.” She had the sudden urge to hug him, but kept it at bay and instead moved to grab his hand. “Come on. It’s Halloween, loosen up a little Jase.”

“No. I won’t wear...this.” Jason shook his head and handed the hat back to her.

“Why not? It’s Halloween. It’s supposed to be a time of fun and not caring what people think. You don't have a costume and this works just fine. It looks cute on you!” She said with a cross of her arms.

He held firm, forcing the hat into her grip. He will not wear that hat.

Why couldn't he just have fun with her a little bit? He never relaxed. The times that he was playful were the best times, but so rare. “If you really don't want to go, then don't.” She finally offered, this time she wasn't playing when the disappointment was obvious in her voice.

“I told you I’d accompany you, didn’t I?” Jason never liked going back on his word. He rarely ever did and he wasn’t about to do so now.

“If you don't want to spend time with me, just say so.” She offered, hating the feeling like he didn't want to. She wanted to spend her time with him. She liked him and wanted him to like her back. “I just thought tonight could’ve been fun for the two of us to go....”

“I already said I’ll go with you, Fio.”

“Then why wont you wear the hat?”

“Because it’s a ridiculous hat.”

“And it’s a ridiculous holiday. It’s meant to have fun and really, what’s so bad about someone seeing you in a silly hat? I think it’s cute!” She crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow at him. “Didn't you ever wear silly costumes on Halloween?”

“No.” He didn’t really go trick or treating as a child. Halloween meant going to the cemetery and visiting his dead relatives graves.

Fio stared at him for a moment. “Did you ever go trick or treating at all?” That had to be the saddest thing she had ever heard of. What little kid never went trick or treating??

“No, never.”

That was horrifyingly sad. Immediately Fio grabbed the hat from his hands and shoved it back on his head and grabbed his hand. “Then we are making up for that and showing you the best halloween ever!” She started to tug him towards the shuttle to get on to be dropped off at the nearest neighborhood. “ Just try to relax and have fun. We’re gonna go to houses and get candy, see decorations, walk through haunted houses and have the best halloween of your life!”

Jason wondered if he could get away with discretely tilting his head to the side and letting the hat fall off. He could claim it was an accident. But she would just force him to get the hat back and put it on again. He knew, no matter what he did, that she’d always force that hat on his head for the rest of the evening. “Can you at least make this quick?”

“We’ll see how we feel in an hour, alright. You have to promise me that you’ll try to have some fun tonight.” She glanced up to him. “and in exchange I promise that tomorrow for practice, you get no complaints from me. Deal?”

“Deal.” An hour in exchange for a complaint-free practice? Of course, he’d take it.

Fio smiled and nodded as she moved to get on the shuttle towards one of the busy neighborhoods. Kids were dressed up as all sorts of things, running around and laughing. There was a haunted house at the end of the block and what looked like more fun beyond that. “Alright. Come on!” She quickly made her way to the first house, handing Jason a bag right before she knocked. “When they answer, say trick or treat.” In case he didn't know what to do.

He held the bag as he awkwardly stood next to her. This wasn’t enjoyable. He considered it embarrassing!

The person opened the door and smiled at them as Fio cheerfully offerer “Trick or treat.” and then elbowed Jason to say it with her. The woman then put a few pieces into their bags. “Smile a little. Come on, maybe we should try the haunted house.” Even if she hated scary things. It might make his night more fun.

Jason shrugged and followed her. “If that’s what you want.”

It wasn't really what she wanted to do. Usually Fio avoided haunted houses, but he had never gotten to do any of this and she wanted him to enjoy Halloween. “Yeah... come on.” She moved to tug his hand and lead him towards the haunted house.

It wasn't too bad of one. Just something that a few people in the neighborhood built out of wood and props. There was fake fog and monsters hanging around. What was scary about it were the people that would pop out of the corners and try to scare people. Fio stopped at the entrance and turned to Jason. “You have to walk first.”

He looked at her, skeptical, before leading the way. “I don’t see what the big deal is,” he commented as they walked through the dark corridor. He barely batted an eyelash when a pair of zombies jumped at them. “Really. It’s not scary.”

Fio on the other hand screamed and clung to his back. Her hands were clutching the back of his jacket tightly. This was a very bad idea. “S-says you.”

She was clinging rather tightly to him. It was quite cumbersome to move that way. “Fio, let go,” he grumbled, trying to pry the girl’s hands off of him.

Fio shook her head against his back and tried to hide her eyes. “No...”

“Yes. This is ridiculous, Fio.”

Fio shook her head but let go of his jacket finally. “Fine....” came the soft whimper from her.

Jason watched her from the corner of his eye. He walked a few steps forward and noticed she made no move to follow. Sighing, he reached back, grabbing her hand and tugging her forward. “Come on.”

Fio stumbled a little and squeezed his hand tightly. There was no chance she was going to let go of his hand if she had to keep going. When another monster came she immediately tried to hide against him again, but let him pull her forward still. Why had this been a good idea? Jason didn't seem to be having much fun and she really wasn't.

He continued walking along. This was rather boring. The monsters did not scare him. The decorations frustrated him. It looked so...cheap and unconvincing. “I hope this is almost over.”

Only a few more turns and they were out. Fio was terrified and he sounded so irritated. Going through that didn't make anyone happy. “Sorry.” She finally muttered once they were free and away from the haunted house.

“Well, what now?” He asked.

Fio gave a small shrug at that and looked up at him. “You’re not really enjoying this...” The idea that she was going to show him all the fun stuff about halloween was falling apart rapidly. “I’m sorry I made you come with me. I just thought that we could have fun together tonight. You never got to have halloween before after all.”

“It’s fine,” he replied, taking the hat off. If this was Halloween, then it looked like he didn’t miss much growing up. “Shall I escort you back to your dorm?”

“Sure....” She moved to walk beside him, still a little shaky from the scares in the haunted house and a bit chilly in her costume as well. ‘It really does mean a lot to me that you came. Thank you.”

He wasn’t oblivious. He noticed her shiver as they walked towards Rose Hall. Shrugging off his jacket, he laid it on her shoulders. It left him only in a t-shirt but it was fine. He could tolerate cold.

Immediately she wrapped it around herself and smiled up at him. It was little things like giving her his jacket that made her like being around him, like him. “I want to make this night up to you... tomorrow, no complaints at practice and anything you want to do afterwards.”

“I look forward to tomorrow then.”

She smiled and hugged him once they got to the rose hall. “I’ll see yo tomorrow Jason. Good night.”
