Who: Jason and Tori
Where: Student Activities Center
When: Wednesday, October 26, 2011
What: Talking and other things
Jason was savoring a rare break from his music. He was so pleased with his progress that he decided to treat himself to an afternoon off. His mentor had recently commended him on his work and the praise had left him feeling giddy. That was why he found himself at the Student Activities Center, enjoying a cup of (subpar) coffee and flipping through the most recent issue of The Strad magazine.
Homecoming was finally over. That meant no more worrying about getting votes to be queen or trying, and failing, to find a date. deciding to take some time to relax away from her room and Lilian’s need to speak her equations out loud under her breath, Tori decided to go to the Student Center and see who was around. There were a few people she knew, but the surprising one was actually Jason. She had barely seen him for anything more than Rose and Thorne activities, and the bonfire where he showed up with his new little girlfriend. The smile that crossed her lips was almost evil as she thought about ribbing the serious male for taking up a romance finally.
“Hello Jason, mind it I sit with you?” Tori asked kindly, motioning to the seat across from him.
He was halfway through an interesting article on Bartók’s Sixth Quartet. Geraldine Walther’s take on the piece intrigued and he took note to try out her suggestions for next time. Hearing his name, he looked up from the magazine and saw Tori. He debated on whether or not he’d allow the other girl to sit with him. Seeing no problem with it, he nodded at her before going back to his article.
Tori smiled politely and sat down across from him and organized herself as she put her back down beside her and took a sip of the bottled tea she had brought with her. He looked like he had no desire to talk, that just made this more amusing. “You know, I’ve barely gotten to see you these last few weeks, how have you been Jason?”
“I’m fine. Thank you for asking. How have you been, Victoria?” Jason answered, not lifting his gaze from the page.
“Very good, grateful that homecoming is over and we can relax a little. Campaigning and then throwing the bonfire was a lot of work.” She took a sip of her drink.
“Congratulations on winning.” He didn’t think he had said that to her yet. He didn’t get an opportunity at the dance. “I suppose you’re looking forward to relaxing?”
“Thank you Jason.” At least he was always polite. Sometimes she wished that Jason was more her type, but obviously she wasn't his either. “Most certainly. What about you? Last I heard, you were spending all your time preparing for your audition into Julliard. How is that going?”
“It’s going well if I do say so myself.” He wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t going well.
“I see. Well congrats then. I’m sure you’ll make it in. You’ve always been a fantastic musician. I mean you were superb at the bonfire.” She leaned a little closer. “I’m glad you went, a little surprised too.”
“Thank you for the compliment, Victoria.” It had been a good night. He had hit all the right notes and he performed splendidly in his opinion. “I suppose I can say the same. It wasn’t a bad way to spend time.”
“Yes, you seemed to especially enjoy your time with your... companion. You two seemed quiet the adorable couple while you were under that blanket. Oh! I have some pictures of the two of you as well I can give you.”
It took awhile for him to process what she said. “We are not a couple. Fio is currently...romantically involved with Dave Karofsky.” He closed his magazine and set it on the table. “You mentioned pictures? May I see them?” He wanted to check if there was anything embarrassing. He wouldn’t want Fio to get her hands on those.
Tori raised an eyebrow at the comment. “Really? You two seem rather.... close. I find it hard to believe that she’s enamored of someone other than you.” Tori dug into her bag and pulled out a few sets of pictures that she had printed of various people, handing one rubber banded set of pictures of him and Fio.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Jason took the pictures from her and began browsing through them. They were mostly of him playing and Fio laying down on the beside him, listening. There were a couple of photos of them huddled under the blanket together, trying to stave off the chill. All in all, they weren’t a bad set. He put the set back together and wound the rubber band around the stack. “I’ll make sure she sees these then. Thank you for the photos.”
“Don’t worry, I have a set for her.” She said with a smile and patted the bag beside her. “I printed out a bunch for everyone.” Tori took another sip of her tea and leveled her gaze at him. “Jason darling, really? You don't hold any feelings for the girl. She is rather lovely... in an unrefined sort of way.”
“Well, thank you anyway.” He set the photos down on top of his magazine and settle back in his seat. “We’re friends. I also consider myself her mentor. That’s all.”
“Really? So you don't think she’s pretty?” Tori raised an eyebrow. The boy was in denial. That was so very...Jason of him.
“She’s...pleasing to look at.”
“She is, isn't she?” Tori smiled like a cat with catnip. “Does she play music?” That was always something that Jason needed. What ever girl caught his heart would probably have to do it through his ears.
“She does. She plays the flute. I’ve been helping her prepare for her competition.” It wasn’t easy, juggling so many things at once. Aside from helping Fio, he had to think about himself, his recital and Regionals. But he’d been doing great so far.
“Really? That’s surprising. I would’ve thought that you’d hole yourself up this entire semester in preparation for your audition.” She leaned back and looked him over. “Does she play well?”
Jason shrugged, “she’s good enough. Her playing needs more polishing if she ever hopes to finish respectably.”
“So, you spend an awful lot of time with her then?” Tori tried to press the subject. Right now she had no love life of her own to speak of and therefore was going to involve herself in everyone else’s. She was already seeing where Tina’s relationship was going and Jason had just handed her another on a silver platter.
“I suppose you can say that.”
Oh yes, she had forgotten that Jason was as thick and usually stubborn as they come. “So you don't have any romantic feelings towards her?”
“No, I don’t.” Jason didn’t understand the fuss about his love life. Don’t people have anything better to do?
“Well you’re no fun then. Don't go breaking girl’s hearts then Jason.” she rolled her eyes. The boy needed to step back into life and away from his music. It was going to pass him by. He needed to get a girlfriend finally to straighten him out. “You know. I have a friend then if you aren’t dating that girl.....”
He sighed. “Are you trying to set me up?”
“Yes Jason, I am. How about Friday night? She plays the viola.” She smiled. There was no chance she was going to offer a non-musician to him.
“Do I even have a choice?” Something told him it was useless to ask but he did it anyway.
“Of course you do, Jason. I am not your mother, nor your girlfriend. Only they have a right to command you.” He was a grown boy, if he really wanted to say no, he could. She just thought it might be healthy for him to have a comparison of women.
He eyed her warily, not really believing her words. “I’d rather you not set me up with someone. Surely, you have some other friend with whom you can play matchmaker on.”
“Jason, just think of the last time you had a date, then decide if you really want to give up on this chance.” She couldn't tell him what to do, but she could influence him just a little.
When was the last time he had a date? He couldn’t remember. He wasn’t even sure if it counted as a date date. It was dinner out with the rest of the Pre-college orchestra and for some reason he and Alice got singled out. It smelled like a conspiracy. It probably was. Shaking his head, he gave Tori an apologetic smile. “Really, I’m fine.”
Tori sighed and shook her head. “Really someday, you’re going to find a girl that you aren’t gonna know how to live without but you wont know what to do with her because you’ve never dated before.”
“I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.”
She sighed and shook her head. “Reactive than proactive Jason.”
“I don’t see a problem with it,” Jason shrugged in response. It was good piece of advice. Also, he had a lot of things to worry about.
“You wouldn’t. If you do find someone though. I am always here for advice should you need it.” She took another sip of her tea and looked at her watch. “I should probably get back to my room and finish my work. Have a good day Jason.”
“You too, Victoria. Again, thank you for the photos. I suppose I’ll see you around.”
