Who: Shay, Mike and Tina
When: Wednesday September 28, 2011
Where: Dining Hall
What: A thank you lunch
Tina walked into the dining hall, scanning the room for either Mike or Shay. She didn’t see Shay yet but she spotted Mike sitting at one of the smaller tables. She grinned and headed over towards him. “Hey, Rink,” she greeted him, “did you bring the you know whats?”
Mike watched Tina approach with a smile. On the table in front of him was a Tupperware container containing the cupcakes they baked for Shay. “Yep, sure did.” He tapped the cover. “They didn’t get squished or stolen.”
“Awesome,” Tina smiled, “I knew putting a ninja in charge of them would mean they would get here safely.”
“I take my role as cupcake protector really seriously,” Mike replied, trying to look serious. He would have succeeded if not for the giant smile on his face.
Tina laughed, taking a seat at the table. “Cupcake protector is a very serious role.”
“Very, very serious,” he nodded in agreement. “Cupcakes are a huge deal. They’re cakes. In a cup.”
“Cupcakes are beyond a huge deal. Cakes in a cup are much more important than just measly old cakes without cups,” Tina agreed solemnly, or what was meant to be solemnly. She was grinning just a little too widely to actually pull off solemn.
It was easy to approach Mike and Tina without being noticed. They were so obviously into each other that Shay had actually been hesitant having lunch with both of them. Being third wheel was rarely fun. “Hi.” She smiled as she took a seat, setting her backpack down next to her. “Sorry if I kept you waiting.”
Tina turned when Shay sat down, surprised that she hadn’t even heard the other girl approach. “Hi,” she smiled brightly at her in greeting. “You didn’t keep us waiting at all. We were just discussing...” she trailed off and glanced over at Mike, not sure if he wanted to tell Shay about the cupcakes yet.
“Ninjas!” Mike looked at Tina before smiling brightly at Shay. “We were discussing ninjas. Tina wanted to learn all about how to be one.”
“Then I can assume you are one?” Shay asked laughing lightly. “Or maybe you can’t tell me. I’m not sure how these things work. Is it one of those of you tell me you have to... poison dart me type things?”
“Damn right I am,” Mike replied rather proudly. “I think I shouldn’t have answered that but oh well, you’re not gonna tell right?”
Shay shook her head, smiling over at Tina before looking back to Mike. “I have two little brothers. I know a lot about the ways of the ninja and they usually involved things and people popping out at you from dark corners. I don’t want to risk having one of the uh, more trained upset with me.”
“That about sums it up. Lots of sneaking around too, don’t forget that part.” He cracked a smile at the thought of Artie doing some sneaking of his own. His mind flashed back to setting up pranks like in the movie Home Alone. “I guess Artie can be sneaky, huh?”
Shay playfully rolled her eyes and shook her head. “I don’t even want to talk about it.”
Tina laughed. “I think pretending to be a ninja and being sneaky are just little brother requirements. Joey sure likes to think he’s one anyway. It definitely keeps me on my toes.”
“I’m not sure what it is but sometimes I just want it to stop.” Shay smiled. She shifted some in her seat so that she could see both of them a bit better. “How’re you guys since the closet? Maybe I should add some emphasis to that somewhere. Maybe the closet? Did everything work out with your teachers?”
There went his hope of not talking about closets. He wasn’t all that surprised that Shay brought it up but he preferred that she didn’t. Oh well. “Our teachers were okay. There was a stern warning not to do it again. And I had to take a make up quiz for Geometry. But other than that...yeah, it was fine.”
Thinking about that closet almost made Tina want to cringe. Considering they’d invited Shay here to thank her for rescuing them though, she knew it would come up. She fidgeted a bit in her seat and nodded in agreement. “Ya, we just missed Monday, so it was fine.”
Watching their reactions Shay realized she maybe shouldn’t have asked. She hadn’t been stuck in that closet with them. She couldn’t know how it had felt. “S-sorry.” She said, surprised at her stutter, as she looked back and forth between them.
Tina felt bad as soon as Shay apologized, she knew her reaction to thinking about being trapped in the closet was a little ridiculous. “Don’t be sorry. We invited you to lunch to say thank you not for you to be sorry. We’re the ones who’re supposed to be sorry,” Tina shrugged sheepishly, “I think it’s just gonna take sometime before hearing the word closet doesn’t make me want to check and make sure that all the doors in the room are open.”
“How ‘bout no one is sorry and everyone enjoys lunch?” Shay asked with a slight smile.
“I like that plan. A lot.” Mike grinned as he nodded. He looked at Tina then at the Tupperware before settling his gaze back on Tina.
Tina watched Mike as he looked at her than at the Tupperware, she nodded ever so slightly at him and turned to Shay. “We made you something to say thanks. It’s nothing fancy or anything but we made them and...” she glanced back over at Mike, figuring she’d let him do the honors.
“And they’re made with love! And normal cupcake ingredients of course.” He opened the Tupperware and picked the most decent looking cupcake. With a grin, he handed it to Shay. “Thank you for rescuing us from the closet!”
“They look delicious.” Shay said as she took the cupcake from Mike. “Thank you so much. I guess I will start taking credit for finding you guys if it means I get cupcakes.” Unable to resist she pulled back the paper liner and took a bite. “It’s so good. You guys had some right?” She asked gesturing to the rest of the cupcakes in the container. “Please don’t tell me you’re giving me a whole box worth of cupcakes.”
“We might have had one...” she glanced over at Mike quickly and smiled, “or two last night. You know, just to make sure we weren’t poising you or anything. The rest are for you though. If you want to share though, I’m pretty sure it won’t take much to convince Rink here,” she looked over at Mike again and grinned at him.
“Sharing is caring after all,” Mike quipped, nudging the Tupperware towards Shay.
Shay finished her first cupcake, balling up the wrapper and setting it aside to throw away later. “Go ahead.” She offered, waiting for Tina or Mike to take a few before she put the lid back on the container. “I’ll get this back to you, clean, as soon as all the delicious cupcakes are gone. I’m sure that won’t take long.”
“Don’t let Lola see them, they’ll probably be gone tonight,” Tina kidded. “So, should we go get food? You know, since we’re supposed to be having lunch?”
“No comment.” Shay looked toward the line and was glad to see that it was pretty short. “Yeah, I’m hungry and I’ve got awesome cupcakes for dessert.”
“Yeah, lunch!” Mike eagerly bounced to his feet and waited for the girls to do the same. He gestured towards the line. “Come on. Ladies first.”
Tina couldn’t help but laugh at Mike’s enthusiasm. She wondered if there was anything he wasn’t enthusiastic about. She grabbed a tray and took a place in the line behind Shay. “How frowned upon is it to just eat ice cream and cupcakes for lunch?”
“Extremely frowned upon, Chiki. Dentists around the world would probably revolt. Or you know, just lecture you. Or something like that.” Mike moved along the line, taking note of the dishes on display. They all looked tempting and he was having a hard time choosing what to eat.
“Says the person who once brought me ice cream for breakfast,” Tina reminded him. “But fine, I’ll eat something with less sugar. Wouldn’t want my dentist to be mad. That sounds unpleasant.”
“Also depends on which Rose you ask.” Shay said, playfully rolling her eyes as she grabbed a few items for her lunch. “But, you could get one who would not approve of eating ice cream or cupcakes at all. If you’re asking me I’d say stick with the cupcake. Maybe ice cream with dinner.”
True, very true. Tina could think of a couple Roses who wouldn’t approve of ice cream or cupcakes. She should probably add that to her requirements for her Little. Must love ice cream. “Fine. You both just ruin my fun,” she pretended to be angry as she grabbed lunch items that didn’t include ice cream. She couldn’t keep pretending very long though, cracking a smile at both of them as she added a glass of water to her tray.
“Me? Ruin your fun? I’m offended, Chiki. Very offended. I thought we were partners!” Mike replied with a huff.
“You guys are so...” cute. Shay started to say but stopped herself. Apparently Mike and Tina were both oblivious to the fact that they liked each other and Shay didn’t want to spoil their little bubble.“Good friends.” She finished awkwardly. “Such... awesome friends to each other.”
Tina nodded. Mike was an awesome friend. Mike was awesome. “I think so but apparently someone is offended,” she turned her head to playfully narrow her eyes at Mike. “Please accept my apology, Rink. We are partners in non-crime. I should not have suggested that you ruin my fun.”
“Yes, you shouldn’t have said that,” Mike nodded solemnly. He fought to keep a straight face as he stared at Tina. “I think you should make it up to me.”
“Okay, fine. I can do that,” Tina told him as they wove their way back to the table. “I’ll have to think of something good though. Only the best for you,” she grinned at him, winking.
“You got that right. Mike Chang only deserves the best!” He declared, setting down his tray and taking a seat. “I’ll be waiting then.”
“It’ll be a surprise then, I guess.” Tina answered, laughing, as she took a seat. She took a sip of her water before she looked at Shay. “So...besides rescuing poor Sophomores who’ve locked themselves in closets, what you been up to?”
“Oh,” Shay said looking up, slightly surprised that the conversation had turned back to her. “I have cross country this semester and my Art class is pretty serious. Um, SATs are starting soon and I’m trying to decide if I should take them this year or next. Nothing special really.”
“That’s um...awesome. Art? So, you draw? Are you good?” He asked, curious. Mike considered Art as his weakness. Try as he might the best he could do was stick drawings.
“I don’t know.” Shay said, always self conscious about her work. “I mean... I don’t think I’m... bad.” She laughed as she moved around a few bites of food on her plate. “You dance right? Artie mentioned dancing.”
“Well, I think you’re better than me.” He thought anyone had to be better than him. He perked up at the mention of dancing. “Yeah! I do. Proud member of the Dance Team too!”
“Do you have a... particular style. Or do you just, I guess, dance?” Shay asked genuinely curious. It wasn’t often that you found a dancing football player. Mike certainly looked athletic enough to be good, if not excellent, at both.
“I can pop and lock,” Mike replied. He wasn’t sure if that was considered a style. “I can do other stuff too but I guess, yeah, I just...dance.”
“That’s really cool though.” Shay said with a smile. “I’m sure people aren’t always the nicest about it either. But you just do it because it’s something you love. That’s really admirable actually and I’m glad that you picked Artie as your possible Little.”
“It is something that I love. Dancing...it’s awesome. I don’t care what anybody else thinks.” The last part was not entirely true. He mostly didn’t care about other people’s opinions. But Mike found himself wondering what would his parents think. What would they say about him pursuing dance?
“I’m glad I picked Artie too. He’s cool.” He didn’t think that at first but now, he knew better.
“Ya, I don’t really know him that well but it seems like it,” Tina agreed with Mike, taking a drink of her water. She hadn’t really spent anytime with Artie but she’d had a couple of interesting conversations with him on their journals and he seemed fun.
Shay smiled, proud of Artie. She focused on her food for a few bites. “Tina, do you want to tell me about your picks?” Shay was hesitant to ask since she would have a hand in the final selection process but maybe it was a good thing so she could lobby for the person Tina most wanted as her Little.
“Sure,” Tina nodded, smiling. “Jamie is in Orchestra with me. She seems really nice,” she shrugged. It was true, Jamie did seem nice but truthfully Tina wasn’t sure about her. Lola had said that when she found her Little she’d know it and Tina hadn’t ever really felt that way about Jamie. Mercedes on the other, Tina was drawn to her for some reason. “Mercedes is pretty awesome and she’s a really good singer. Like really, really good.”
“But you think both would make good Roses, you just like Mercedes better?” Shay asked as she pushed her tray away from her, finished with her meal.
“Yes, I’m sure they would both make good Roses,” Tina agreed. “Mercedes is just...I guess I just like her better, I don’t really know why.”
“That’s fine. I’m sure you wouldn’t pick people who you didn’t think could be a good Rose. So, it’s great to know who you like... more.” Shay quickly added. “Not that Jamie doesn’t have a fair chance of being selected. It’s just... nice to know who you prefer.”
Tina nodded, finishing up the last of her lunch and pushing her tray aside. She felt kind of bad that she already had a preference in who she wanted as a Little, it didn’t really seem fair to Jamie but she couldn’t really do anything about it. She picked up her cupcake and tore back the paper. “I really like cupcakes, they’re almost as good as cupcake batter,” she mused.
“I gotta agree. I mean, cupcake batter’s all sorts of awesome. It’s gooey and fun to eat and I haven’t even thanked you for introducing me to it! Or, it to me.” Mike piped in with a smile. “And teaching me how to bake. I gotta thank you for that too, Chiki.”
Tina grinned at him. “Nah, you don’t have to thank me. You were an excellent student. Best whisker ever probably.”
“So you’re gonna say no to ice cream?”
“Wait? You were going to thank me with ice cream?” Tina waved her hands, “I take it back,” she smiled at him. “You definitely need to thank me. A lot. I think. A lot, a lot.”
“Oh really now?” He teased. “I suppose I’d figure something out.”
Tina grinned at him. “Okay, Rink. Sounds good.”
Shay sat back, tapping lightly on the top of the container of cupcakes as she listened to Tina and Mike talk. Later she would enjoy her cupcakes now she would enjoy watching the two of them be adorable.
