Log: Tike vs The Librarian

Aug 31, 2011 12:22

Who: Mike and Tina
When: Monday afternoon, August 29, 2011
Where: Sullivan Family Library
What: Study buddy time

Mike dragged his feet towards an empty table and immediately slumped down on the nearest chair. He felt so tired already and the week has just begun. He sighed and chucked his bag on the chair beside him and started setting up. Setting up in Mike's case mean just dumping all his stuff on the table. He glanced at the watch on his wrist before looking back at the entrance. No sign of Tina yet. He leaned back in his chair and eyed his French book warily. Slowly, his hand inched toward the cover and flipped it to today's lesson. No harm in starting early, right?

Tina was running behind. She’d accidentally left her math textbook in her dorm room and she’d had to go back to get it. She jogged to and from Rose Hall as quickly as she could but a quick glance at her watch indicated that she was still five minutes late, hopeful Mike wouldn’t be too annoyed. She slowed to a walk as she entered the library and scanned the room for Mike. She spotted him sitting at a table by himself and she made her way over, setting her back pack quietly down on the table and pulling a chair out and taking a seat. “Hey Mike. Sorry I’m late.”

Mike looked up with a grin. "Hey, Tina. It's okay. I didn't mind waiting." He closed his book and tossed it back on the table. He wasn't reading it at all. He was just flipping through the pages, stopping only when a diagram or a comic strip caught his eye. "So…how are we going to do this?"

“Umm...” Tina ran her hand through her hair, tucking a piece behind her ear. She hadn’t really thought much of the logistics of having a study buddy. It had just seemed like a good idea. “Maybe we can just do our homework and if we have questions we can ask each other. I don’t know if you guys are getting the same assignments as us but I’ve got a French one due at the end of the week and we have to do geometry problems every night.” Tina shrugged, uncertain. “Whatever you want to do is good though.”

"Sounds good to me." Mike had been hoping Tina had an idea on how things were going to go. But it looked like she was as clueless as he was. He grabbed his geometry book and flipped his way to the end of Chapter 1 where the problems were. "We got daily problems too. Mr. Wiggins says it's supposed to make sure that we apply what we learn in class or something like that. And, French. Essay time." He wasn't looking forward to doing that at all.

Tina relaxed a little bit, pulling her books out of her bag too. “Teachers are all about applying what you learn in class but I bet they wouldn’t be so enthused if they were the ones doing these problems sets at night.” Tina thought a minute about her math teacher and how excited he always seemed to be about geometry, she shook her head. “Actually, my math teacher probably does problem sets for fun.” She laughed. “Is your French essay about family? That’s what we’re supposed to write about.”

"It's all about application!" Mike tried to mimic his teacher's voice. "Problems are the best way to see if you've learned something!" He smiled as he started scribbling in his notebook. "I think all Math teachers are like that. I think it's what they do for fun." He shuddered at the thought. He liked Math. Really, he did. But he would never think of solving problems as fun. "Family? I think so, yeah. It's gonna be torture, writing that one."

Tina giggled at Mike’s impersonation of his teacher, it certainly sounded an awful lot like her teacher too. “Math teachers will remain a mystery to me.” She flipped her math book to the right page and wrote the date at the top her paper. “I don’t think the French essay will be terrible. At least it only has to be two paragraphs. But torture, you say? I think maybe you feel about French the way I feel about Geometry.”

"Math teachers are a mystery to everyone. That's for sure." He scratched out a few lines and rewrote his solution. At this rate, he'd be better off rewriting his assignment rather than handing in this mess. Mr. Wiggins liked clean homework. "Two paragraphs! I think that's one too many. It's a good thing then. That we're opposites. Because it would mean we'd actually be able to help each other."

Tina nodded in agreement as she doodled a picture of a fence to go with the math problem she was currently working on. She often found herself doing that, spending more time doodling out the scenarios outlined in the word problems, then actually solving them. This is why she needed a study buddy, someone to keep her on track. “Having a study buddy who hated all of the same classes as you probably wouldn’t work out very well, huh?”

"It would be pointless, actually. That kind of study buddy is no help at all." Mike looked up from his paper and peeked at hers. "Geometry would like you better if you stop doodling, you know."

Tina blushed at being caught. “Oops.” She sighed before actually solving the problem. “This area stuff isn’t too hard, I guess. The syllabus for this course terrifies me though. Everything after areas looks like a never ending nightmare.”

"Nightmare?!" Mike gave her his best offended face. He wasn't able to hold it long before breaking out into a grin to show he was just teasing. "But that's where it gets interesting! I promise I'll help you because that's what a good study buddy does."

Tina grinned back at Mike. They hadn’t really spent a lot of time together the previous year but he’d always been friendly and she was kind of glad he’d offered to be her study buddy. He seemed so easy going and it was refreshing to be around. “So that’s what study buddies are for? Who would have guessed?” Tina couldn’t help but tease him in return, laughing lightly. “Well in that case, I promise that I won’t let French torture you.”

"It's the name. It's very deceiving." Mike played along. He didn't think he'd have this much fun studying. He got the impression that Tina was the shy quiet type. He was glad he was proven wrong. "You better keep your promise then." He waved his pen at her. "Otherwise, bad bad things might happen."

Tina’s eyes widened as she feigned terror. “Bad things sound bad. It’s a good thing that I’m very reliable and that I always keep my promises then.” She winked. She didn’t really know what had gotten in to her, she never talked this much, except with Lola and sometimes Quinn or Tori.

"Good. Because you don't want to know what those bad things might be. They're bad." He winked back. Mike wondered if this counted as flirting because it certainly felt like it. He ducked his head back down to concentrate on his work, a smile still on his face.

Tina couldn’t keep the smile off of her face even as she looked back at her book and tackled the next problem. She was having fun, a lot of fun actually, and that certainly wasn’t a word she’d ever associated with homework before. She circled her answer, stopping to make sure that her work looked neat because her teacher wouldn’t accept it otherwise, before she looked back up at Mike. “I think I like having a study buddy. Thanks for doing this with me.”

"I like having you as a study buddy." Did he say that out loud.? Oh crap. His eyes widened in horror as he realized what he said. He thought about backpedaling but decided against it. He'd probably make an even bigger fool of himself if he did. He forced himself to keep working on his math problems. Maybe Tina didn't even notice.

Tina’s brow furrowed a bit at the expression that flitted across Mike’s face. He’d almost looked scared or something for a second. What was that about? Wait. Did he say that he liked having her as a study buddy? Was he saying that he liked her? Were they flirting? She eyed him a minute longer before she realized she should say something. “I like having you as a study buddy too.” Tina resisted the urge to face palm. It might have been the truth but it sure sounded awkward.

Mike didn't think it was possible for his smile to get this big. And he was sure if he kept this up, his jaw would start hurting. He didn't mind though. "Good. That's really good. Yeah…good." He nodded and snapped his mouth shut before he could say something more embarrassing.

Tina grinned. “Good.” Blushing, she ducked her head and tried to concentrate on the next math problem, it was the last one she had to do for tonight’s problem set. She was suddenly having a hard time focusing though. When she finally got an answer that seemed reasonable she dropped her pencil onto her book. “Did you get 25 square feet for the last question?” She asked and when Mike nodded, she grinned at him. “Awesome. Math zero, Tina and Mike one.”

"We kick ass at this already." He closed his notebook and put away the Geometry book. "Geometry, down! French next?"

Tina nodded in agreement. Pulling out her French textbook, she answered, jokingly using the French pronunciation of his full name. “Oui, Michael.”

Mike made a face and grabbed his book. He flicked it open to the correct page. "Okay, let's get this over with."

“Do you want to just do the sheet with the translations for the extended family today and then we can work on the actual essay another day this week?” As soon as she said it, Tina immediately got quiet and looked down at her book, silently berating herself. She shouldn’t have just assumed that Mike would want to study with her another night this week. What if he didn’t want to?

"Yes!" His voice was louder than he thought. He could see the librarian looking at him suspiciously. He ducked his head in embarrassment. "I'd like that. I mean, we could do that. Yeah."

“Yeah?” Tina smiled looking up, her voice somewhat unsure. She felt a mixture of relief that he was okay with her idea and excitement at the prospect of getting to spend more time with him. “Good. That’s really good. That’s great...” she cut herself off realizing she was heading towards rambling idiot territory. “So we just need the French words for mother, father, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, and cousin and we’re good.” After listing all of the words, Tina shook her head, laughing a little. “Okay, so maybe I shouldn’t have said just. That’s a lot of words.”

"Yeah." Mike reiterated. He looked at his paper, reading along as Tina listed the words. "That is a lot." He murmured the Mandarin translations as he set about filling his worksheet.

Tina started filling in her worksheet, she knew most of the answers without needing to flip through her book but there were a couple that she’d need to check. She noticed that Mike seemed to be talking in a language that she didn’t understand. “Hey, that doesn’t sound like French.”

"Because it's not French. It's Mandarin. I figured I should sneak in a little practice for that as well." Mike made the mistake of neglecting his Mandarin studies once. His grandmother wasn't too happy about that. He promised to take it more seriously and this was his attempt at it.

“Mandarin?” Tina asked. She was impressed. “That’s pretty cool.”

"Yep. Mandarin. My dad and my mom insisted on it. Especially since we almost always visit the family during the summer and they don't speak English." He didn't think it was cool though. It was just normal.

“Oh wow,” Tina said. Her mother had sometimes spoken Korean to her, she could vaguely remember the way it sounded, but that had been a long time ago now. Besides her grandfather and uncle, her dad’s father and brother, Tina didn’t have any extended family, or at least not any that she’d met, and the idea of visiting family during the summer sounded nice. “It’s nice that you get to see your family during the summer.”

Nice? Crazy was more like it. Those summer visits were always a big deal. Everyone came. He saw different faces every year. He couldn't even begin remembering names. He forgot them as soon as he went over to the next smiling face. He couldn't help but play the "How am I related to this person game" every time. "Nice is one way to put it."

Tina laughed at the tone of his voice. “You sound unimpressed.”

Mike shook his head. He understood how she came to that conclusion. "I didn't know how to explain it to you. And…I was trying to be nice."

Tina smiled at him. “It’s okay.” She got how families were hard to explain. Her family was small but explaining about them usually meant explaining about her mother and that was something she really hated thinking about. She finished filling out the last word on her worksheet. “You finding the answers okay or do you need some help?”

"I think I'm good. But I'll let you check my paper anyway." Mike glanced at his sheet, deemed it presentable and slid it towards her. "What do you think, study buddy?"

Tina looked at his sheet quickly, confirming that everything looked good, before grinning at him. “I think we might be the best study buddies ever. We totally kicked this homework’s butt.”

"Sweet!" He took back his homework and stashed it with the rest of his things. "This year's gonna be a breeze. Because, hello? We rock at this study buddy thing." He grinned and held out his hand for high five.

Tina brought her hand up to meet his, shuddering a little at the look the librarian shot their way when the sound of their palms meeting resonated just a little too loudly in the quiet library. “I’m glad you responded to my desperate plea for help,” she laughed, “because we do kind of rock.”

"I'm glad I did too. Otherwise, I'm sure French would have made my year suck." Mike chuckled in response. He began putting away his things. The librarian was sending out creepy vibes and he was sure one more sound would get them kicked out. "So, when are we gonna work on that essay?"

“Does Wednesday work for you?” Tina asked. She had plans with Lola and Tori tomorrow to practice the violin, so that wouldn’t work, but she found herself wanting to get together with Mike again as soon as possible.

"Wednesday's fine." Mike was about to pull out his phone to input it in his calendar but he remembered where he was and stopped himself. He scribbled down the note on the first scrap of paper he could find. Wednesday. Study time with Tina. "Same place? Or do you want a…change of scenery?" Mike glanced pointedly at the librarian before snickering.

Tina looked over at librarian. The library was probably the best place for studying but she couldn’t help but think that she’d rather be somewhere where she could talk and laugh with Mike without worrying about getting yelled at. “I don’t know. Where else could we go?” Tina looked at the librarian and snickered too. “She looks about ready to try and get us expelled.”

"I figured as much." The librarian was watching them like a hawk now. Mike grabbed the strap of his backpack, ready to hoist it on his shoulder. "We could try the Activities Center? Or under a tree or something if you feel like it."

“We can try the Activities Center and if that doesn’t work out we can use a tree as backup. But whatever you want.” Tina quickly put her things away while she answered Mike, slinging her backpack over her shoulder. They really needed to get out of here before the librarian actually did start yelling.

"Activities Center then. Wednesday." Mike said as he pushed the chair back to its proper position. He was rewarded for his effort with the loud screech of the chair's legs scraping against the floor. Great. He spared another glance at the librarian. She looked like she was getting ready to approach them. Not good. He quickly ushered Tina out of the library. He smiled at her.
"Wednesday, Activities Center." He gave her a quick wave before walking off.
