I have met the nicest girl. Her name is Hermione, and she is a fifth-year Gryffindor student as well! Hogwarts has been very lonely for me. She is the only person who has bothered to speak with me much. There is the girl from the train, Samantha, but I am a little scared of her. She is popular here and there is something strange about her as well. She is in my dormitory, though. I do think that we shall have a chance to get to know each other soon. . . I have seen her in the halls with her friends, and a boy. He does not seem like the kind of person she would like. Thin and . . . book-like. All of her friends have pinned their skirts too high. I am shocked that the teachers allow it! Hogwarts is not nearly so strict as Beauxbatons.
Hermione is nice and good though, and organized a study meeting for the Gryffindor students. No one came but us! I was surprised. At Beauxbatons, we were all quite dedicated to our studies. The American and British students don't appear to be so interested.
Noël cannot come soon enough this year. I miss my parents so dearly. I never thought it would be this hard. It is strange, because I have often been away from them for many years now. I have never felt so far away from them before. I don't like it.
