I was first assistant director on set today, a somewhat terrifying job, but a rewarding one. We got all the shots we needed, which was perfect, because that's a 1st AD's #1 priority on set. And I got lots of compliments on my job. So it was solid.
The movie (Aaron's) was set in a post-apocalyptic warehouse, where one person looks for food while the other looks for power. Charles was the Art Director, and he created this great set. I was waiting for Gina to set up lights so we could shoot, so I went over and started talking to him.
"Hey," I said. "Did you ever get caught up in the Final Fantasy VII craze?"
"Hell yeah."
"Your costumes remind me of that one character; I forget his name."
"Oh yeah! I know who you're talking about."
(Note: You don't. There's a character that dresses in a brown and grey leather sack-like thing, he's a blimp pilot or something, and he's got goggles on.)
"I really like them, though. This is really good."
"Yeah, thanks," he said. "I'm really pleased with it. I did some concept drawings beforehand, and everything came out really close to what I'd wanted."
"Did you find the costumes in the Prop Warehouse, or buy them?"
"Half and half. They look good, right?"
At this point I turned to one of the actresses, Rhea, to judge her costume. The goggles looked great, there were these big goofy boots that fit perfectly, and everything looked like post-apocalyptic refugees. But before I could say that, I realized I had just given Rhea the once-over.
And then she winked at me.
.......I am so misunderstood in my time.
