I goofed.
Apparently Sam and Madsen had some huge fight over the prank phone call. At first I wasn't positive that their argument was about me. Honestly, I didn't think Sam cared about whether Madsen annoyed the hell out of me or not. I thought the fact that he was trying to get rid of me was common knowledge. I just wrote about it in my letter because it was something different, and also, because I didn't want him to think that I actually was involved in a sex scandal. Sam's best friend is a dumbass, but I've dealt with plenty of those at my other schools, and he's no different. Anyway, I threatened their friend Nick with a mechanical pencil, and he explained most of it.
I'm the reason why Sam's walking around with kicked puppy face. And as much as I'd love for him to be finished with Madsen, it's not fair. They were friends for a long time before I showed up, they should be friends now too. I don't get why Madsen hates me so much; I haven't done much of anything to get in the way of their friendship, and if I did it was unintentional. Except for telling Sam about the phone call, which was his fault. Plus, I had no idea that Sam would get so upset about it.
But now that he is? It's really flattering.
I spent most of history class thinking about how Sam's life would be better without Madsen. He'd be more popular, get better grades, the teachers might even like him...but he doesn't want that. Any idiot can see how bummed the two of them are. They sit with their desks separated, looking alert for a change, and we're supposed to think that everything is normal?
No, I don't think so.
Instead of going down to my sixth period class, I ran down to the VMR to tell Ronny, the assistant director of the musical, that I was losing my voice and needed to rest. He didn't question it, and called the attendance office to tell them that I'd have to be excused for the rest of the day. Then I got my stuff together, stopped by the auditorium payphones, and called the office. I said that I was Sam's Aunt Betsey, and that he had to leave immediately because of a family emergency.
Then I waited for him out in front of the school. When Sam came out, I put my hands on my hips and grinned at him.
"Don't look so surprised, Madsen isn't the only one who knows how to screw with authority. Do you even have an Aunt Betsey?"
I'm curious.
