Megthelegend for beta’ing this fic and coming up with the title that had long eluded me.
The Object of Everyone’s Affection
Retsu was feeling in a pretty good mood today, last night he had had some great sex, upon arriving at SCTRC this morning he hadn’t had an argument with Gou and the Rin Jyu Den hadn’t tried anything. Yet.
Still it was rare that such a peaceful day would befall them and Retsu had decided to enjoy it up on the roof with a canvas and paints. The breezy afternoon and the gentle light of the sun bore down on him as he sketched, it was just a vague few lines at the moment, he hadn’t quite decided what to do just yet but he had most of the afternoon to figure that out.
He was gently sketching a curve of what could either be a lampshade, a shoe or a wave when he heard the roof door open. His heart sank a bit, he was hoping for privacy especially whist he had his post coitol haze. Maybe if he ignored whoever it was they would just go away. Hopefully it was a SCRTC employee stepping out for a smoke or five minutes of fresh air.
Masaki Miki strolled across the rooftop towards him, confident and proud. Retsu had been hoping to avoid her and her indomitable ‘you’ve had sex’ eye twinkle at least until the post coitol glow had faded. He just had to avoid eye contact. And talking. And moving. Right now, becoming a statue didn’t seem such a bad idea. Or Rin Jyu Den attacking.
“Good Afternoon Retsu,” Miki said carefully enunciating each syllable. If Retsu hadn’t been steadfastly engaging in a staring contest with a passing cloud he would have seen Miki’s hands were behind her back and she was leaning forward with almost girlish curiosity.
“Afternoon Director” He replied eyes fixed on the wispy cloud shaped like a motorbike helmet. He wondered if he could spontaneously combust then reform in about thirty minutes. He managed to force his arm to curve his pencil across the canvas, pretending he was calm and nonchalant about the entire situation and maybe rescue it before it turned into a mangled train wreck that got hit by lightening.
Behind him Miki giggled and slipped her hands under his apron to nip his waist. Shocked Retsu jumped around nearly catching the mischievous director with the sharp end of his implement. Hastily he lowered the pencil, sheepishly smiled a (hopefully) boyish smile and apologized. It was then he noticed the top three buttons of her shirt were undone. And he’d lost his staring contest.
Before he could recriminate about that Miki smiled broadly at him and reached forward to grasp his hands.
“Glad I’ve got your attention,” She purred linking fingers and pulling him closer.
Suddenly he went cold and his heart started beating fast. “Urrrh Director what do you want?” He managed to get out.
“Just you” She whispered, her eyes fluttered shut, her lips formed into a pout and she pushed up on to her tip toes.
Several thoughts went through Retsu’s head in the approximately three second time span he had between him realising Miki’s intent and approximate time of contact, the highlights including:
‘Goddammit’
‘What do I do?’
‘What will Nanase-san think?’
‘What will her overprotective co-worker do to me?’
‘What will Gou do to me?’
‘Why can’t Rin Jyu Den attack now?’
‘Is that lace?’
‘Why God? Why?’
Fortunately he managed to put together a shaky plan of action when she was just millimetres away. Quickly he turned so she caught his cheek, at the same time he forced his hands out of her grip and backed away, behind his canvas.
However he was dealing with a Leopard ken master. In one graceful bound she cleared the easel and floored him, his training kicking in quickly enough to hit the ground safely. Miki straddled him attempting to reach round for his apron strings whilst Retsu tried to hold her arms still. Seconds later he remembered his groundwork training and manuvered his arms and legs into position to rock from side to side and built enough momentum to roll them over. Miki liked this, reaching for his collar but Retsu got up and made a mad dash for the stairwell, hoping if he got inside quick enough he could avoid anymore of this extreme bizarreness.
He reached the Gekiranger lounge, entered and registered the sound “tttttttssssssssssuuuuuuu” before being flying body tackled by Jan. Retsu was though on alert after his recent encounter with Miki and recalled a sacrifice throw to send Jan flying. In record time he was back on his feet and Jan fell back from the wall dazed.
Gou, holding a noodle bowl, Ken, halfway through a bag of Menchikatsu and Shafu with a crepe just stared at him like he was crazy.
“What?” He said.
But before he could get any further he was glomped from behind, this time from Ran who latched onto him like a limpet. She nestled her head into his back sighing happily before attempting to drag him out of the room.
His unlikely saviour turned out to be an enraged Jan who ripped Geki Yellow away from him with such force she screeched. Unwilling to take a chance on his other teammates Retsu decided on a running start and wondered if he could fit into his locker. Or at least reach his mobile.
He slammed into the changing rooms at full tilt, twirled in his locker combination, almost pulling it off its hinges and shoving both his hands into his kit bag ferreting out the black piece of technology.
Also to his advantage the walls in the SCTRC building were not very thick so he could hear Jan and Ran’s shouts down the hallway. Quickly he slammed his locker shut and ran for the fire exit at the back of the locker room.
Crashing though the doors he hit the stairwell, taking two at a time and frantically checking for a signal.
Seconds after he got three bars two messages hit his inbox. One was from her. Call me. Brief and to the point. The second was a voicemail notification. Before he could dial in his access code he received a call from an unknown number. He hit answer as he rounded the bend.
“Yo.”
Though he had never heard the voice before he was somewhat sure of its owner.
“You.” He panted.
“Me,” The voice stated. “Look she has requested I pick you up. I’m outside SCRTC now on my bike”
“What!?” Retsu shouted
“Questions later” The voice growled. Retsu nearly tripped, but caught himself in time to see Miki and Ran burst out onto the stairwell one floor above. Stuck between an uncomfortable and an awkward place Retsu started taking three stairs at a time, shouted “I’ll be there in one minute” and hung up.
Stuffing his phone in his pocket he focused on the stairs clearing as many as possible without tripping or falling. Jan burst out of the second floor door as Retsu hit the turning and narrowly avoided a crushing body slam.
Cries of disappointment mixed in with Jan’s own language were loud and clear as Miki and Ran shoved past the tiger boy much to his dismay.
Not thinking about the repair bill Retsu summoned his Jaguar to slam through the emergency exit doors shocking several passers by and used it to clear his path. Pedestrians scattered and a cyclist delivering several Bentos went flying to which Retsu paid no heed. He charged across the plaza towards the main entrance spotting his kinda girlfriend’s overprotective part-time shadow.
Retsu recognized the dog eared jacket before he recognized the hair and bored stare, distinctive even from a distance. His saviour recognized him, pulled on his helmet, holding one out for Retsu.
Yanking it on Retsu slipped one leg over the bike and wrapped his arms around the other man’s waist. With a roar the bike was kicked into gear and sped off. He sighed into the back of the man’s battered leather coat and hoped there was a bloody good explanation.
-
His saviour however was a dangerous biker, weaving in and out of traffic like a madman, obviously confident in his skills. That also ceased to matter a moment later when he spotted a giant tiger in the wing mirror.
“This is bad,” He shouted, the man in front muttered similar sentiments. He managed to speed up, an incredible feat in such dense traffic and rounded a corner. Out of nowhere Geki Wolf suddenly blindsided Geki Tiger and the two began pawing and biting at each other. Suddenly worried for his brother’s safety, Jan could be vicious when he wanted, he nearly asked his saviour to stop.
Before SaiDain strolled up, catching the irate tiger from behind. Retsu sighed again took his eyes away. He missed Geki Cheetah and Geki Leopard join the fray.
Ten minutes later the bike pulled up at a small smart office building. He released his arms quickly as soon as the bike’s kickstand was down and was back, safely on terra firma. Wondering how many more times today he would sigh and took his helmet off in time to see his not quite girlfriend, Nagasaki Nanase exit the building, dressed in black pinstripe slacks and a long-sleeved white shirt, her black hair pinned back in a messy bun, far more formal than he’d ever seen her.
His leather jacketed companion retrieved the helmet from Retsu and locked it in the box on the back of the bike. He kept his own far more intricately decorated in his hands.
She sighed with relief upon seeing the two giving Retsu a quick hug and peck. To her co-worker with whom he could see the under running chemistry she dished out a quicker hug and a whispered ‘Thanks’. The effect the simple sentiment had was clear in the body language, he stood slightly taller and his shoulders tensed.
“Come on, lets get inside,” She said turning back to the building.
Once inside she lead them to a canteen, ordered three large mugs of coffee and sat them down.
“Right I take it you’ve realized something weird is going on and I know Yaguruma has already heard some of it but you still deserve an explanation.” She sipped her coffee and closed her eyes sorting the story into a cohesive whole before starting.
“So three days ago SPD got an unauthorised entry alert, not uncommon and went to investigate, the robot they found was empty, not common but not unheard of. So they sealed it and sent it to processing. About an hour later when the attending officers were in decontamination an unidentified pathogen was identified. The officers were put into quarantine immediately. Meanwhile the guard at the processing facility suddenly attempted to solicit a co-worker, one investigation later identified that he had a crush on. She however was in a relationship, a consummated one. The processing unit was also quarantined but it was too late, incidents suddenly were cropping up all around. Always the victim had recently had intercourse and the assailant had feelings, feelings never expressed.”
Retsu and Yaguruma both swallowed nervously.
“Also the assailants have always been sexually inactive; currently the estimate is a minimum of one month before the incidents. It was discovered a few hours ago that the robot had been inhabited and that an alien is on the move. As such I have ordered a sweeping curfew which will be announced soon. We will clear the streets, then track the alien down, we should have an idea of its movements soon. In the meantime I’m calling in a few favours and hopefully assembling a team enough to take it down. Do you know how hard it is to track down sexually active superheroes?”
Retsu and Yaguruma each gave shrugs.
“Bloody hard,” She leaned back in her chair “So far I’ve got you two and Kamen Rider Faiz.”
“Faiz?” Yaguruma said, “Are you sure?”
“Yeah, we checked, Orphenochs are immune. I should hopefully hear from MagiShine and MagiBlue soon. That should be enough.” She sipped her coffee again. “Anyways I have to finish preparations. We should hopefully have a go in two or three hours.” She grabbed her unfinished mug and strolled out of the canteen.
Taking a gulp of his own Retsu looked to Yaguruma. “Is she always like that?”
“No”
They both sipped their coffees, unsure of what to say or do next.
Retsu gave Yaguruma a careful once over, dark, poorly kept hair, tanned skin though a sickly sheen was present, battered leather jacket, trousers and boots. He wondered what she saw in him.
“So,” Retsu said, deciding it might be a good time to get a few questions answered about her. “She’s a Rider right?”
“Yeah.”
“And she works for the regulatory body behind the Riders and Sentai?”
“Correct.”
“And you’re someone she’s contracted to help get the jobs done?”
“I have been.”
“Have been?” Retsu asked
Yaguruma leaned back in his chair “At the moment I am employed by her superiors as her bodyguard” He crossed his spurred boots over one another “I’m sure you’ve noticed her health hasn’t been at its best.”
Retsu looked to the bowl of condiments on the table, he took a sugar. “She has seemed thinner recently.”
Yaguruma nodded “To the point she’s not cleared for single combat.” He put his coffee down and folded his arms.
“Oh” Retsu said ripping the packet open and pouring the sugar into his drink. He didn’t normally take it with his coffee but he needed an extra boost. “Have you slept with her?”
Yaguruma’s expression remained even “Yes”
“Hmm” Retsu swirled his coffee a moment before sipping it.
-
Three hours later Retsu found himself back on Yaguruma’s motorbike speeding towards the centre of the city. Apparently the Faiz guy would be meeting them there whilst Nanase waited for MagiBlue and MagiShine to arrive. The streets were deserted except for the occasional military truck, containing hastily picked soldiers that were either married or in stable relationships that had recently been on leave.
Their orders were find out if it was hostile, if not escort it to the secure unit that had been prepared, if so execute it with extreme prejudice.
“Extreme?” Retsu and Yaguruma both asked.
“Yes, not just regular but extreme prejudice, the kind where we won’t even be able to recover the remains,” she answered.
So here they were. They found the bizarre alien toddling across an empty plaza. The boys removed their helmets hanging them on the handle bars.
“Stop” Yaguruma yelled, his coat swishing behind him. The beast turned to face the Rider and cocked its head. “My name is Yaguruma Sou, I’m her-”
He never had time to finish the sentence as the beast waved its arm and sent a flurry of darts at Yaguruma. He rolled to the side and Retsu ran up.
“So extreme prejudice” Retsu said
“Right”
“Tagire! Kemono no chikara!”
“Henshin!”
“Beast on!”
Side by side thick armour arose around Yaguruma Sou whilst a skin tight battle suit formed over Fukami Retsu.
Without a word to each other they dashed in, ducking under another spray of darts. Yaguruma high kicking, Retsu with elegant punches. Their double team worked briefly before the monster revealed its talent for wave attacks sending them both back. As they fell back a foot careened in above them in a red and black suit. It landed in the face, the beast reeling back.
The Rider landed perfectly, turning to face the fallen Geki Blue and Yaguruma. He flicked his wrist. “Sorry I’m late”
Yaguruma and Retsu both grunted, stood up and prepared to reengage the enemy.
Summoning his fans Retsu went in first dodging several punches from the thick armed beast twirling in and out of range, slashing. He backed off in time to avoid the gunfire from Faiz followed up by a kick-punch combo from Yaguruma.
The thing, ugly and blue growled angrily. It shoved Retsu aside dealt Yaguruma a vicious blow to the stomach before charging Inui Takumi down with the force of a mach truck.
Quickly Yaguruma and Retsu circled back together running in to get the thing off Faiz. It worked, only to get themselves kicked in the chin as it reeled around. All three combatants shared a nod. Yaguruma’s hand went to his belt where he felt out his rider mechanism, Retsu got into stance and Takumi grabbed what looked like a wheel and pulled the phone out of his belt
“Cast off” Yaguruma shouted, the call echoed by the belt
“Super Geki Claw!” Retsu shouted, once it materialized he added “Super Beast On!”
Takumi dialled in 555 and hit enter. “Awakening, Standing By,” stated the mechanical voice
“CHANGE KICK & PUNCH HOPPER!” Yaguruma’s Belt announced
“Super Geki Blue!” Retsu shouted, the KaGeki flowing off him
Takumi flicked his wrist as the Blaster mode finished materializing.
The beast looked around itself, as if suddenly realizing this was serious business. It howled and sent out another shockwave, which everyone jumped. Seconds later another motorbike pulled up and a carpet flew into view. It took Retsu a moment but he recognized them as Heavenly Saint Sungel, AKA Hikaru and Ozu Urara, he had met them at a Sentai combat seminar three months ago.
“Chou Mahou Henshin!” Shouted Urara
“Goolu Golu Goludiro!” Shouted Hikaru
“Henshin!” Shouted the Nanase jumping off the motorbike.
The addition of the three fighters quickly drew the fight to a close, the six of them formed a ring around the creature.
“Last chance!” Shouted the female rider, angling her Katana “Surrender, or we will not hold back”
It yelled an unintelligible stream of gibberish and made to run at her before Retsu, Urara and Hikaru crashed through it from three directions.
“Super Jaguar Geki!”
“Fantastic Splash!”
“Prominence Crush!”
As they attacked Yaguruma, Takumi and Nanase prepared their finishers.
“RIDER JUMP! RIDER KICK!”
“EXCEED CHARGE!”
Yaguruma and Takumi both flew at the opponent whilst Nanase, crouching low dashed forwards, slashing with her blade.
All six fighters turned away from their opponent, adopting finishing poses. It exploded in a shower of sparks and flames covering up a sound Retsu dearly wished he had heard.
“RRRRRRRRRRRRReeeeeeeeeeeeettttttttttsssssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu” And hence Super Geki Blue was wiped out, landing on the ground with a harsh thump. Either side of him Takumi and Yaguruma ran in, hauling the excitable Jan off the poor man. Seconds later Ken ran up.
“Damn Retsu you sure are beating them off with a stick today” Any post battle euphoria instantly evaporated at the possibly rather mortifying conversation to come. Around him everyones’ armour fell away so he let his go, returning him to his normal self. With as much dignity as he could muster Retsu stood up and dusted himself off.
Only for Miki and Ran (having seemingly formed an alliance) to grab an arm each. Hikaru and Ken kindly pulled the Leopard Ken master off whilst Nanase and Urara peeled Ran away.
“I’m not going to have to get the hose am I?” Nanase muttered. Ken laughed for a second only to shut up at the look in her eyes.
Gou then arrived and Retsu decided he wanted to melt into the ground and never be heard from again.
-
A week had passed since what the media had been told was ‘The result of unknown compounds from a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere over Tokyo’ and Retsu had returned to SCRTC no longer under the fear of being mauled by his colleagues and superiors.
Ran had apologized many times. Jan had been given ‘The Talk’ by Gou, something that haunted Geki Violet for the rest of his life, he had been caught muttering ‘Damn pansexual tiger brat’ more than once. Geki Red seemed unfazed and had delivered his ‘Sorry’ in amongst ramblings about what Gou had explained about the birds and the bees. Miki had also apologized repeatedly but Retsu did sometimes catch the ‘But damn I wish you had been willing’ look in her gaze.
Retsu wasn’t sure, maybe he would have, if Nanase wasn’t around and if Gou hadn’t come back.
Surprisingly Gou had been the one who seemed angry over the incident. It wasn’t until he pressed Ken for answers that he found out what Miki had said whilst under the influence of the pathogen. No wonder he was going around with his patented ‘Don’t make me mad’ look on his face.
Gou and Miki’s unresolved issues were none of his business though, not matter what Miki’s opinions of him were. Retsu decided he could live with that. It wasn’t like any of the entire debacle was his fault, even if Gou went around with that look on his face.
‘Just what our relationship needs’ Retsu thought.
The insights he saw into Nanase as well bugged him, it was the first time seeing her in action as Kamen Rider Amaterasu as well as in clothes that couldn’t even been considered casual smart. It was a distinct change from the woman he was used to. Somehow they fitted together. He could deal with that and Yaguruma, even seeing that side of her, their relationship wasn’t anything more than it had been beforehand.
With that thought Retsu returned to the piece he had started the week before.
