I am back! I feel alive again! (mostly)
Ok, without any more ado, the last three albums!
Favorite Album of the year #3-
Bishop Allen- The Broken Tread
Bishop Allen is composed of hopeless romantics. They are lovers of life--often falling to the pull of wanderlust and unrequited love. However, unlike other musicians, they do not dwell in the failures of life; but, float from experiences. As they say in the refrain of track two, "Rain": "So let the sky be grey. Because if it is gonna get any better, its got to get worse for a day."
Incorporating staccato drums, flat piano and xylaphone, banjo and electric guitar, Bishop Allen re-imagines roots music for a new millenium. Their music is fun-although rarely as radical as the could (or should) be--ultimately bringing a new edge to pop.But if this is the future of pop music, bring it on. As they say in their opening song, "The Monitor": "And I still understand that a rock 'n' roll band doesn't mean a blessed thing."
Recommendations:
Track one- "The Monitor"- Gothic folk seems all the rage recently. But unlike their fore bearers (I am looking at you The Decemberists), they don't seem so...quaint. The horrors of war are truly horrible in this song about the first iron clad warship. A very brave opening song.
Track 2- "Rain" This poppy number may not fit the lyrics at first. But Bishop Allen remains an otomist. The bongoes resemble the progressivivsm that ultimatly makes this a love song to activism
Track 4- "Chinatown Bus"- The ode to Wanderlust takes on a stream of consciousness worth of Whitman or Ginsburg. The simple drum and trumpet noted by chimes and flute give it a dreamlike quality but, dreams of grandeur and adventure. Like dreams on a bus.
Track 6- "Castanets"- More than a song about Spain, this is about exploration; new adventures, sights, smells and flavors. But instead of taking the opportunity at the crescendoed climax, it dissolves into sentimental romanticism.
Track 7- "Butterfly Nets"- Bangjo and light, airy female voice rejoice in the agony of unrequited love. But this is life and love. Thus, proving Whitman right: Happiness is a butterfly that alights on your shoulder in the still, quiet moments.
But nothing beats the calming (and yet slightly disturbing) "Flight 180"
