1) the fact that she might be systematically offing SHIELD agents to get their attention is a excellent excellent thing to point out because it shows how calculating and how methodical her mind plays these things. aaaaaaaaand, how the moniker of Black Widow starts to evolve into a different meaning with each kill. heh, me gusta. :-O brilliant employment of the making and remaking thread of natasha's narrative.

Thank you! :) I think this whole sequence (well, and the bits in the previous chapter where she's going over the last few months) are my favorite of the story. This bit: "Her kills weren't signature, they were all over the map, and it was making their behavioral psych guys nuts. Which was really amusing to watch." might just be my favorite line of the whole thing. Thanks to an X-Files fic I love to pieces I have this whole *Thing* about the two of them and psychs.

2) in contrast to that, clint recognising the pattern, or lack thereof as one itself, is also an excellent excellent thing to point out because OF COURSE he would logically draw that conclusion. he's working off the everything is redacted in redactedville file and staring at the absence of information creates a stark contrast to the evidence presented. OH CLINT!

I think this is the first time since he started with SHIELD (and maybe even since quite a bit before that) that he's gotten to do something where he really gets to hunt. Which is the part of the process he really, genuinely enjoys.

3) holy shit, i really hate general ross. he would be that asshole guy that throws people under the bus. this part in like, two sentences, really shows off how SHIELD works. they're not the bad guys but they're not exactly good either. grey is a wonderful colour on them so of course the greyest of the grey MUST be running it and calling the shots. anything to get shit done at a calculated cost.

Precisely. They don't exist (officially) so that they can be grey, plausible deniability and so on. Ross... he's a megalomaniac, and dangerous. I'm not sure I'd realized just how dangerous until I saw the chronological "cut" of the movies that's floating around and got to see his scenes talking to Emil Blonsky kind of separated out a bit. But he's seriously scary. The things he's willing to do and the lengths he's willing to go - so when I needed a bad guy I threw him in there.

4) 'scuse me whilst i puke rainbows in yer face for sharing this well constructed and intriguing story that hits all my plotty mcploterson and headcanon buttons. like, ALL of them.

:D Yay! ::dances::
