Dysfunctional Relationships and Favouritism
Heechul
Heechul likes Hankyung the most. He doesn’t love him; he doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to. Why? Because his heart isn’t capable of love, he recently discovered. His past, the past that caused him to become an insensitive asshole, changed him in ways unthinkable and even the simplest emotions can only be painted on his stiff features after long, gruelling practice. It hurts to smile. It hurts to laugh. It hurts to pretend that everything is okay. But when he’s with Hankyung, he doesn’t have to pretend. He doesn’t have to impress Hankyung; because he knows the other man will love him regardless of how and what he’s feeling. Hankyung’s love for Heechul is unconditional, and even though he often feels guilty for pretending to love him back, he figures that this is as close to love as he’ll ever get. And in some ways he is content with this knowledge that he’ll never know or feel the real thing.
But either way, Hankyung is his favourite. It may be the fact that Hankyung is a foreigner. He’s different from the other members. He has a silly accent, weird ways of thinking and is just really… different. And different is interesting, and interesting, abnormal things attract Heechul’s attention. He makes Hankyung cook for him, because he loves the food. He makes Hankyung dance for him when there’s nothing interesting on TV, just because he can. He lets Hankyung sleep in his bed more than he probably should, because he likes the feeling of strong arms around his body. It makes him feel less vulnerable. He likes to press his ear tightly against Hankyung’s chest and just listen to his heart beat.
Although sometimes he is greedy and sometimes (albeit rarely, he admits) Siwon turns Heechul on more than Hankyung ever could. He likes to thinks it’s Siwon’s perfect personality, although it’s probably, definitely, his wonderful physique. And that makes Heechul sick to his stomach because he has always strived to hide his shallow tendencies and love with his eyes closed.
Siwon
Siwon is in it for the sex. He loves neither Heechul nor Hankyung. He likes them, sure, but only as much as he likes every other friend he’s ever had. They are merely his guilty pleasure, the ones he turns to when his body is aching with need and twisting with the anticipation of sweet release. And he doesn’t think they realise this, so he feels no need to be ashamed or guilty. In fact, he feels quite the opposite. It’s exciting, dangerous, and truth be told, just very convenient for him.
Maybe the day will come where he has to make a choice. The girl he will grow to love, or his two best friends who love him more than they should, more than he thinks is right. And the choice, he believes, will be the easiest he will ever have to make, because it needs to end someday, and why not when he has someone else with whom he can spend time with in bed. And maybe it will be a more romantic relationship because at least his heart would be in it.
He’d choose the faceless girl in a heartbeat, and lose his friends without a backwards glance.
Hankyung
Hankyung loves both Siwon and Heechul. He adores Siwon’s kind personality, his gentle touches and soothing words, but he lives for Heechul’s erratic mood swings, eager tongue and cruel insults. He loves that they are so different that he can love them as if they were the same person. They complete each other, and in doing so, they complete Hankyung too.
Siwon is the perfect son that every mother would be proud to call her own. On days when Hankyung is upset, Siwon drops whatever he’s doing to be by his side. He’ll stroke his hair softly and hold him close as Hankyung sobs, shakes and whimpers about being so far away from his family. Siwon doesn’t understand his pain and he probably never will. It’s scary being in a completely foreign country, involved in the most exhausting and draining business that exists. But Siwon had the ability to numb the aching pain that courses through his body using only the faintest touch. And that’s why Hankyung loved him; he helps him forget.
Heechul gives the impression of being malicious, greedy and downright bitchy, when in fact; he is the most caring person Hankyung has ever had the fortune of meeting. All Hankyung really knows for sure is that Heechul is incredibly vulnerable and so he creates a wall around him. It’s a wall that no one can penetrate. Not even Hankyung. However, he is the only one who knows his secret, the secret about his past. He sometimes feels the urge to tell someone else, perhaps Leeteuk, as it pains him to see the man he loves faltering, fading away, breaking and slipping through his fingers. Hankyung likes taking care of Heechul, of course he does, but he would rather see the older man happy and alive. He can see the muscles twitch around Heechul’s smile, and he knows it’s fake, so forced.
Hankyung loves with all his heart. He loves a man he can never have, one that will never love him and one he knows will cast him aside as soon as he finds someone better. And then he loves another man who is so close to the breaking point that he’s like a ticking time bomb, pieces constantly crumbling off him like locks of soft hair falling to his feet. Hankyung loves with all his heart, and he knows it’s dangerous, but at least he’s happy.
He’s prepared for the future, whatever it may bring him. He knows heartbreak will be inevitable.
