Nightmares (Open)

"What're you doing here, Nate?" Peter asked, sitting up. He was in the caves and he could hear Kalmorth snoring, so how the hell was his brother suddenly standing at the foot of his bed?!

"I'm here to save you, Pete. To bring you home." Nathan strode over and came to rest on the floor, kneeling down on one knee. His hand reached up to brush away ( Read more... )

Darvish was on the way back to his weyr from the kitchens; he'd needed a bit of a distraction, and one of the girls working nights there was always willing for a tumble, he'd found. Better that than wine. It had to be. Berith didn't seem to have a problem with it, at least. And his other cravings left the dragon's eyes whirling that distressed orange color. So. He just switched what he wanted. And a good workout was never amiss, he thought wryly.

His musing was interrupted by a man rushing past. Peter, wasn't it? He thought that was what he'd said at that lesson, the last time they'd had a chance to talk. He'd looked upset. Darvish followed, watching him for a moment before he spoke. "Problem, friend?"

Peter wiped his eyes roughly and hunched in on himself. "Nope." Despite being so very hot a few minutes ago he was suddenly freezing.

Kalmorth nosed his leg and then sighed, not leaving Peter to check out the other dragon or his rider. This was serious. Peter was making him anxious.

Berith was sleeping in the weyr, having no interest in Darvish's wenching. It would have been handy to have him here, to ask the other dragon questions. They seemed to care more about the rider's well being than any personal privacy. He took a step forward, placing a calloused hand on the man's bare shoulder. "Sure?"

"Yeah." He didn't sound very convincing, Peter knew that. But he didn't want to unload all his problems on a stranger.

Kalmorth whined softly and put his chin on Peter's knee.

"You look like you could use a drink." He offered the man a hand to stand.

Understatement of the year. Peter looked at his hand, then at Kalmorth.

He is nice. I'm thirsty. Let's go get a drink!

He bit into his lip and then took Darvish's hand, hefting himself up. "Okay."

He retraced his steps back to the kitchen. When they entered, Rella looked up with a laugh. "Back for more, D'rvish?" she teased. "I have to get some work done tonight, you know."

Darvish flashed her a wink. "No, I'll leave you to it. I was just wondering if we could get a flagon of wine?"

"Of course." She ducked into the cellar and came back shortly with a large jug, which she handed to Darvish before turning with a provocative sway in her hips.

Peter watched, amused despite how red and puffy his eyes were from crying. "Something going on here?" he asked, nudging Darvish with his elbow.

"Going on?" Darvish raised an eyebrow in mock confusion. "Come, let's let the lady get back to her duties." He bowed over the wine, then led the way out.

"You'll be back, D'rvish," Rella chuckled, turning back to her ovens.

Peter took the wine from Darvish and did a long chug before handing it back. He made a face after, wiping his mouth. "Yuck. Not as good as the stuff mom buys back home."

Fumes teased his nostrils, making his stomach churn with longing. Even the sound of it sloshing as he walked... He raised the jug slowly to his lips, taking a long pull. "It does the job," he said shortly, passing it over.

Peter gladly took it and gulped down another swig. He walked until they came to a small bench near the caves, plopping down.

Kalmorth curled up at his feet, tired.

Darvish reached for the wine, fingers trembling the slightest bit. He could feel it, burning in his blood.

He handed it over, then tipped his head back to look at the sky. "Do you ever have nightmares?"

"Who doesn't?" He laughed dryly, taking a long swallow. Usually, though, the wine blocked any such things from his sleeping mind, and here... well, he'd had a few. But not too many.

"But I mean...intense ones, that are about things going on in your life. Not just regular run-of-the-mill bad dreams."

He took the wine from Darvish and sipped before handing it back.
