Hannibal sat on a rock, enjoying the sunlight, watching his dragon--and what a strange but wonderful concept that was, his dragon--in the bathing pools. The young dragon was washing with understated enjoyment, especially compared to the enthusiastic ( Read more... )

"W-what? They commit suicide?"

Euroth suddenly reared up on his hind legs, picking up on Luke's sudden, emotional distress. L'ke?! What is wrong? Why are you upset? I am well!

"If I die you'll kill yourself?!"

Euroth's eyes started whirling faster with alarm and he clumsily pulled himself out of the pull and started for Luke. Don't think of such things! Why are you thinking of such things? I'm alive and well and you do not need to worry like this!

Luke tried getting his emotions under control but finding out Euroth would suicide if he died... for a guy who believed he wouldn't live past twenty-one it was a horrible feeling. His own death, he could handle. The death of someone whom he'd already started to love so deeply was another story.

Euroth suddenly bowled into him and rubbed his head affectionately against Luke's torso, mentally giving him reassurances that he was okay he was fine there was no need to be sad.

Luke reassured Euroth and hugged his head. Suddenly his whole world was turned upside down. He had to survive now! He had to be more careful. "Sorry," he said quietly. "Didn't mean to make a scene there... Euroth's way more sensitive to what I'm feeling than I thought." Which meant Euroth was gonna be a dead giveaway whenever he was trying to hide stuff, too.

Morath had also picked up on the topic of Hannibal's thoughts, though he showed more restraint than Euroth.

Where you go, I will go. I will always be with you.

The young dragon didn't seem at all distressed by the prospect, but was obviously worried about Hannibal's reaction. He nudged against him, and the man knelt and wrapped his arms around his neck.

You're young yet. You haven't experienced life. You'll still be young when I'm gone.

Where you go, I will go. You will need me.

You can't know that. No one knows what happens after death. I would be happier if I knew you were alive and well.

I will not be well without you.

His arms tightened around the dragon. "Morath..." he whispered. But it was an argument for another day. He tried to shake it off, and looked back up at Luke with a weak smile. "Something we all have to get used to," he said softly.

"I've never been in a committed relationship before," Luke joked. "Never even got to first base...

"It's like having a kid and a companion all in one shot, right?"

"You'll do fine," he said with a soft chuckle, not commenting on the last part of that remark. Things like that were none of his business. He'd never been a father, himself, but he'd often thought his team were the sons he'd never had. He would have done anything for them. And this, with his dragon... it wasn't the same, but there were similarities. It was definitely love, and it was definitely forever. "It's pretty wonderful," he murmured, stroking Morath's neck.

"Yeah... it really is." Luke sighed. It wasn't even close to the life he thought he'd had but that didn't mean it wasn't miles better.

"So, did you hear how long it'll take for these guys to grow big enough to fly?"

"They should be able to fly pretty soon, I think. Of course, the real question is when will they be big enough to ride?" He gave a wry laugh. "That could be a bit longer. Especially for a big guy like me." At 6'4", Hannibal did tend to loom over most people.

"Ha! Right..." Luke looked speculatively at Hannibal's size. "Probably a good thing you impressed a silver dragon. You'll need the size!"

He laughed softly. "I'm sure even the smallest full-grown dragon could handle me. The youngsters, though... it probably is good that I've got Morath, here." He gazed down at his dragon with a fond smile.

"Yeah, it's nice not be alone. Anyways, now that Euroth feels pretty I'm heading back inside to find a belt and some breakfast.

"Catch yah later!"

"Enjoy your breakfast. It's been nice talking to you." He smiled warmly and waved him off. "We'll be thrown together again soon."
