As many of you know, I (finally) started a graduate program this year. I'm rusty and way out of practice in the research department, but am so far muddling through. I'm currently taking an HR Law class, and am working on my seminar paper. The topic that I'm writing about is Gender Theory and the Changing Face of Discrimination Law. Some states (including RI) have "Gender Identity and Gender Expression" written into anti-discrimination law as protected classes of individuals. I'm going to explore gender theory, the background of various anti-discrimination laws in employment and how employers are (or can be) rising to the challenges presented in the work place. In particular, I want to talk about work place challenges (real and perceived) and some employer best practices.
So, that's a lot...especially given that it's not an incredibly long paper and I haven't written a research paper since 1987. :P
Why am I telling all of you this? Many of you have been great sources of education to me over the years both in terms of your own thoughts and research/writing styles as well as in terms of your stories regarding gender experiences in your work life. I'm hoping that some of you might have things you would be willing to share with me to help me along in this project. Specifically, if you have suggestions for reference material relative to gender studies, or if you care to share personal anecdotes of how gender (yours or anyone else's) has played a role in your work life I would be grateful. I am especially interested in stories related to how your employer may have handled (either really well or really poorly) any issues relative to your gender. Please let me know if I can cite your anecdote.
I'm posting this here vs. on a broader forum because I remember specifically some of you sharing work stories that I would consider relevant. If you are willing to share, but just don't want to re-write, you can always just send me a link. Again, just please let me know if I can cite your story or if it's just for my background research.
You can either respond to me here, or at awetum@aol.com. (Please note that this post is NOT private, and I have not screened comments to allow for some interaction.) Thanks very much in advance for anything you are willing to share!
