Wireless router connection help please!

Okay ,I haven't posted in ages, and I'm doing so now to beg for pc help.

I just purchased a Rangemax Next Wireless N Router WNR834B. My wireless card is Intel (r) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN.

I've followed the wizards and the instructions and guidance I've found on the Netgear users forum. Despite all that, I'm still getting "limited connectivity." I have been fully connected a few times, but when I power down my laptop I lose it. It takes me forever to get it back, and I've yet to figure out what the magic combination of tasks happen to be. I repeatedly redo my router information (i.e. the wireless settings, security options, passphrase, wireless card access list). I delete and re-add the wireless network on my laptop. At some point, voila, I will have a connection, but then it's gone. As near as I can tell from what I've read, my security type needs to be "WPA2-Personal, with AES encryption. (Nothing else has worked at all.) I also had a difficult conversation with a Netgear customer service associate. I hesitate to call back because we don't speak the same language and 45 minutes of saying "Can you please repeat that?" requires too much energy on my part. And oh yeah, there is an upgrade to the Firmware, but it's not downloading by any of the three ways the customer service dude gave me. He said try later when it's not so busy. I guess all the various access points have been non-stop busy for two days....

I have not done anything wireless before and this is all new to me. But I spent a pretty penny on my shiny new laptop and what is supposed to be a screaming good router and frustration doesn't even begin to describe what I'm feeling. The basic installation and set up was very straight forward and easy to follow. And, I'm glad I'm doing it vs. paying for the service, otherwise I'd have no idea how to reset the router, or anything else. I'm sure the fix has to be something fairly easy? I hope? Anyone?

Much appreciation for any assistance anyone can provide before I bring the stinkin thing back to the store!

(P.S. I had gotten rather disillusioned about this particular series of router when I read the Netgear support discussion boards. But then, I realized that lots of the posts were from months ago when it was still in beta testing. I just read a Consumer Reports article as of this month that says this (in combo with a netgear wireless card) is the best combo for wifi, if one decides to go that route. Sooooo...I'm not quite as concerned about my choice, just about the details.)
