Room 508, Friday Afternoon

Ellie's mood was hard to figure out at the moment, all because of one piece of mail sent to her. She knew this day was coming, the day she would learn the house in Encino and other belongings were being left in her name. There were meetings she needed to attend and papers that needed to be signed. Basically, it meant more responsibility.

She was used to it, really. Maybe not on this level, but she'd been the responsible one before. She'd been making sure bills had been paid since she was twelve. Owning a house? That couldn't be too difficult...

She just kept staring at the notice, thinking it was unfair that her parents took off, that she was left with all this responsibility. This wasn't something she should have to deal with. She shouldn't have to miss out on a trip to Hawaii for this. Perhaps her priorities were a little selfish, but she was still only eighteen. They should be.

Then there was the sadness. She knew on some level that her dad wasn't returning. It had been over a year since she last heard from him. Still, she had some hope he would be back for her and Chuck. This was the final proof, though, that he wouldn't be back. Ellie couldn't help thinking about the past when things were normal. When her family was normal. Then she remembered her real family was here. Chuck was the only family that mattered to her. This was just one more crazy thing they would have to deal with.

After awhile, she crumpled the notice and threw it across the room in anger. Maybe it was childish, but she didn't care. It made her feel a little better. Except not really.

For the first time in nearly two years, she was going back to California.
