Postal Reading Challenge - Book #2
A second book for the Postal Reading Challenge.
It's "Letters From Aceh", edited by Dennise Rao (ISBN 1921030429).
It's almost a picture book, featuring reproductions of letters written by Indonesian school children in the aftermath of the tsunami in Banda Aceh in 2004. Most of the initial letters were written by students of the Jakarta International School with replies from children in Aceh.
I must say, there's quite a contrast with the children cocooned in safety in Jakarta who maintain a certain innocence and write about their school, families and hobbies. The replies from Aceh describe fear, natural destruction, dislocation and families destroyed.
I wonder how those children are doing now, eight and a bit years on...
