Summary: It hurts Ianto to admit it, but he loves Jack.
Disclaimer: I don't own Torchwood, do you think I would have done that to Ianto if I did?
Jack didn’t love him; Ianto knew that, he’d always known that. Yet Ianto still loved Jack, and always would. The coldness of the floor and the weakness of his body showed that always was coming sooner than he’d have liked.
And so he said it. Knowing Jack would never reply. Knowing that Jack was well aware of the fact, but needing to say it regardless.
“I love you,” he croaked.
“Don’t,” came the reply.
Looking into his eyes, Ianto resigned himself to the fact that was all he’d ever get. He saw Jack longing to repeat the words, but saying he loved him would be an insult to Ianto, a lie on his deathbed. His eyes started to flutter shut, no longer being able to bear staring up at the object of his unrequited love.
“Ianto. Ianto. Ianto, stay with me. Ianto stay with me please,” Jack pleaded. “Stay with me, stay with me please.”
Ianto forced his eyes back open. Jack’s finger was cool against his cheek and the circular motions soothing.
“Hey,” he whispered, “it was good, yeah?”
“Yeah.”
And then he could hold it in no more.
“You’ll forget me,” he choked.
He was once again staring into the face of that most amazing man. Love, pain and anger flooded his veins, mingling with the airborne poison, as he waited for the answer.
“Never could.”
A lie, Ianto knew it was a lie.
“In a thousand years time, you won’t remember me.”
He just wanted Jack to tell the truth for once.
“Yes I will, I promise, I will.”
A final lie. The most hurtful of all.
And as the final flutter of breath left Ianto’s lips, Jack’s heart reached out to him, because he’d never loved Ianto the way Ianto loved him; because Ianto deserved so much more; because the world must be a fucked up place in the eyes of Ianto Jones.
