This week has been something else. We had a bunch of judges and their staff out on vacation over the previous couple of weeks, so now things are picking up as they return to work. The upturn of cases has coincided with the mechanical failure of one of the two staff elevators in the courthouse. That made life a pain for our file room runners. We deliver and pick up files from chambers and each runner has about a dozen stops on their runs. Run No. 2 picks up and delivers to the 7th, 6th and 4th floors while Run No. 3 serves the 9th, 5th, 3rd and 2nd floors. The courthouse has seven elevators: Nos. 1-4 for the general public, Nos. 5 & 6 for staff only and No. 7 for prisoner transport only. 5, 6 and 7 require special keys to operate. A and B levels at the courthouse are restricted areas-staff only. The public elevators will only access those floors before 8 AM or after 5 PM. Having No. 5 out all week meant a lot of time waiting on No. 6. Of course, it got fixed today (Friday).
News here has been abuzz with stories related to last Sunday's major pursuit that started in Northwest and ended on the Northeast side of town. A crazed man fired shots into his neighbor's house with an automatic rifle, then led police on a chase that left one Tucson Police Department officer dead and two Pima County Sheriff's Department deputies with minor wounds. The unfortunate TPD officer was struck by automatic rifle fire as he attempted to exit his car, leaving behind a wife, adult son and one year old daughter.
I'd go on more, but I'm worn out so I'll sign off for now.
