Background:
Alphonse Elric grew up with his elder brother in the middle division for 10 years with their mother, that is, until a long-term illness took her away from them. With their father no where to be found, Alphonse and his brother, Edward, worked hard together to make ends meet. The younger tried, in his own way, to suppress his feelings of sadness because of their mother's death, but his own body failed him. His brother, Edward couldn't seem to stand this and blamed their never-present father for their mother's death.
They supported each other, the two until their house was suddenly under attack. Afraid that his brother would come back, Alphonse ran into town to find him, only to find the townspeople yelling out that Edward had ran back to save him. Stricken with denial, Alphonse desperately searched for news of his brother and, after countless months of searching, hit a breakthrough. After traveling with a group of young rebels, Alphonse was tipped off from one of his new companions.
His brother was in the military, and with his urge to see his brother again, Alphonse took the test and failed. And with this set-back, it only caused the young Elric to try harder. Leading him to where he is today--an apprentice. In order to make ends meet, he travels to different shops for work to sustain himself, but one fact never leaves his mind--one ambition. He will by any means, meet his brother again.

"Here's your pay for today, Alphonse. Be sure to use it well!"
A small, thin, envelope was placed into the soiled hands of a jaunty boy, who wrapped his fingers around the paper as if it was his only means of survival. His chestnut hair shone a sparkling orange in the setting sun as a slight giggle slipped past his lips.
“Thank you, Mr. Peters” Alphonse Elric chimed, giving his boss a slight bow of the head before he shuffled to the door, a smile clear on his face. “I’ll come in early tomorrow to sweep the entrance before the customers come in, sir.”
“Al-Alphonse, you needn’t do such a th-"
“Don’t worry about me, sir; I’ll be fine,” he called out again, politely reassuring the elder man before he rounded the corner towards the apartments that populated that certain area.
Slowly, the Elric’s pace lessened into a stroll as a sigh exited his mouth. His head lowered and counted the puddles that spotted the stone-dressed sidewalks against the river. A frown now sat between his cheeks, but silently he reminded himself that there was still a ways to go until his home.
A few people called to him from the little boats that dotted the waterways and he chirped up and waved as he always did, day in and day out. Then, within a few moments, in the depths of an alleyway, Alphonse climbed up a couple of steps and slipped into the door only to be met with the tantalizing aroma of an apple pie. It smelled...just as their Mom would bake them.
The last flight of stairs, two floors from the ground, led the young teen to a hallway then to a door. After fidgeting with the lock and key, he opened the door to a modest room. There were only the essentials-after all, that was all that he could afford.
Air escaped his lips as he laid down his bed, provoking the bed’s springs to scream with rust in their throats. His brown orbs moved tiredly to the small, burned picture of three figure; one of them was hugging the other two.
“Brother...” he mumbled under his breath. “Where could yo-"
BEEP BEEP BEEP
There was no time for this, he kept telling himself as Alphonse plucked himself off of his bed and slipped on a jacket. It was time for his next job, and the quicker he could find money for books, the quicker he could meet with his brother again.
