Which is a relief to us all.
September 1, 2007
Dear Friends,
Her mental functioning has improved. Her ability to remember specific times -- distant or recent past -- is back to about where it was three weeks ago. Her ability to use recall words or name things is also about where it was before her sickness. When she met with a speech therapist, two days ago, with whom she had not met in about 6 weeks, that therapist noted how much better Jane was.
Jane's stamina, however, is still fairly limited. Going one place -- say to her doctor's or out to breakfast with Les -- will knock her out for much of the day. She spends quite a bit of time dozing either in bed or on the couch. This is extremely frustrating for her, as she wants to improve, or at least to be able to work on improving. And that's severely limited.
Yes, we've certainly explained how long pneumonia can affect stamina. And she is relieved that her reactions aren't just her, but typical of pneumonia recovery. But it's still hard sometimes.
Regarding a relief to all of us: Looking back, I realize how hard it's been for us to see Jane regress, then not improve into new ground for almost a month. We've not had that since she fell. We all want her better, even much better than she is now. We're all working toward that. And even though her doctor says this is just a blip in the road, it's still been hard.
I'm hoping, in the next week, I can get back to what has become my measuring stick for self-care: am I walking 4 or so times a week? Once that happens, I find I improve in many ways. I'm hoping this weekend -- for us, Sunday & Monday -- will see me walking a little with Jane, her condition permitting. And maybe the week following, I can post a more extended review on how things are going.
Continued thanks for all your prayers, good thoughts and concerns.
Wishing you all a great Labor Day
