I've started jamming with the intent of forming an Irish punk band. Linda will be dancing angrily in a little plaid skirt. We'll be covering the Pogues and Flogging Molly as well as putting high-octane twists on all the old barroom faves (The Wild Rover, The Irish Rover, Whiskey In The Jar, etc.). You get the idea

So far, the rule I've been using is that if there's already a band that has that name, and that band is organized enough to have its own website, then that's clearly a no-go.
(That's how Whiskey Rebellion, Magically Delicious, and Tragically Delicious got eliminated.)
I was aware of the novel named Gilligan's Wake, but, as far as I can tell, there's no band of that name. Of course, there are plenty of band's who take their names from previously existing works of art (Duran Duran, Save Ferris, and even the Rolling Stones). But is that okay?
And before you answer, I should point out that I don't place a very high premium on originality. We're a cover band, for cry-eye.

For what it's worth, I'd avoid jokey or overly clever names as the joke wears thin real quick (says the man who wanted to name a band The Stitshanes). And who says that just because it's an "Irish" band that it has to have an Irish name? Coming from someone who loves this sort of music, I find the jokier names off-putting. FYI, it's best not to make potato references. It's sort of like calling an R&B band Watermelon Feast.
Of the list I'd chose Stout Rebellion. By the way, what's a "marbit"? And why Meg Tilly?
