Can anybody explain the appeal of facebook to me?
I got so many invitations that I finally joined. But after a month of diligent trying, I find myself frustrated and not really sure why people like it.
Everything on facebook is a McBlurb. The whole thing is designed to keep communication as brief as possible. It doesn't track threads, so if you jump into a "conversation" too late, no one will know which post you're responding to. And the main way of posting to your wall (the only place most people ever look) is limited to a 200-character first-person, present-tense statement.
No offense to any of my friends, but I'm not really interested in knowing that you are eating a grilled cheese sandwich or cleaning your grout. I can't help but think that you've got a little more depth than that.
On the other hand, the popularity of facebook suggests that it's very much in-tune with our times. Most people don't WANT to read or write multi-sentence journal entries (a la good ol' LJ). They want to keep communication as brief and ejaculatory as possible. It's the perfect time-kill for a text-messaging society.
Vive LJ!
