In which Jess actually says something political

I'm not what you call a news watcher. As in... I never watch the news. Ever. But when a piece of news so disturbing finds a way to penetrate my little no-idea-what's-going-on bubble, it is huge. For instance, the disaster in Japan is one of these events. Most of the time, these are natural disasters or heinous acts of terrorism.

But one thing did pop into my little universe of apathy, and I think I'm probably more upset with my country's political situation than I have ever been in my life. Along with a few European nations, the United States launched 122 missiles at Lybia.

I guess we're at war... again? Still? Two wars? I don't even know at this point, but one thing is for certain: whichever it is, it is damned illegal. According to our OWN laws, all acts of war not specifically linked to our nation being in peril are unconstitutional. So what am I to think when we blitz a country a half a world away -- AGAIN? But no, I wasn't half as angry as I am now until I stumbled upon this quote by a constitutional scholar way back in 2007:

"The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation."

I couldn't have said it any better myself. Let's see... who said that again? Oh, this is the frowny part. Barack Obama said that whilst still the Senator of Illinois.

The world is going down the fucking toilet, and the people who campaigned with hope and banked on all our fears are the pied pipers that are leading us down the drain faster. It's a slippery slope to stand for anything these days, but this sort of global scale hypocrisy is one thing I never intend to tolerate.

Someone, for the love of Merlin or whatever deity you entrust with your soul, get me out of here.

fuckery, angst, rant
