Avril Lavigne may be all grown up, but that doesn't mean she's shedding the tough girl image she had when she released her debut album in 2002.
The punk rock princess posed topless for Maxim's November issue, clad in just black leather pants, spiked gloves and smoky black eye shadow.
"I've always had a great time shooting with Maxim," Lavigne, 26, said of her third shoot with the guy-friendly mag. "I feel like it gives me my freedom. It's an edgy magazine, so it's cool."
Lavigne has often portrayed herself as just that - edgy - but she's not afraid to show her softer side, too. And, no, that's not a reference to the sleek curves she shows off in the body-baring spread, on sale Oct. 12.
"I like a classy man, a gentleman who opens the door and gives flowers and always puts the lady first," Lavigne admitted. "I'm a little old-fashioned like that."
So is the singer saying boyfriend Brody Jenner, 27, is a "classy man"?
It would seem so, as the couple has appeared to be attached at the hips for most of this year.
The two initially looked to be an odd match: he, a socialite and reality show veteran, and she, the global superstar who recently divorced Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley.
Even odder is that all three seem to get along well these days, with People.com reporting a group hang-out last week at Hollywood nightclub Premiere.
Perhaps it's a sign that Lavigne has come to terms with her love-hate relationship with the opposite sex, a topic that has provided much fodder for her albums.
Her upcoming disc "is the first that is not boy bashing," she revealed to Maxim, adding, "Is it inspired by my personal relationships? Yes."
Lavigne, who described herself as "really shy and quiet," admitted that she cares what people think of her, but acknowledged "you can't please everyone."
"I'm here to create my music and give it to the world," she said.
