My parents and Alex and my grandmother and I went down to my grandmother's vacation house in Hull today to begin to clear stuff out to prepare to sell the house, kind of assessing the situation a bit. The place is very run down, covered in mold and dust. My grandfather and grandmother never really got rid of things, and so searching around the house can be a real fascinating look into the past. I was looking through a box of music when I found something interesting: a world war II official navy poster saying, "Take it from me brother--We've still got a job to do." Below the slogan was a man in a navy uniform with crutches and one leg missing below the knee.
Another, more racist, poster said, "We'll take care of the Rising Sun You take care of rising prices." Interesting stuff. There was also a book shelf with, not surprisingly, some very old books. Among them was a first print copy (published in 1929) of the book All Quiet on the Western Front. I also found piano music that my great grandfather had written out probably about 70 years ago. Very, very interesting.

Unfolding these posters on the guest bed and holding them up to look at them was so much more interesting than looking at a picture of a poster in a textbook with some lame caption. Very cool stuff I think.
