I have to say, that between this and Stranger things, it is a bit surreal to watch series were the characters a bit older than me (Stranger Things) or a bit younger than me (Derry Girls - I was still a teenager in 94-95, but out of school already) but made now, and played by actors that a bit older than my kids. I have a weird feeling of being two ages at once. Of course, what helps is that both US childhood and coming of age in Nothern Ireland are alien experiences to me, anyway, that I can relate to on some specific levels. But then, they had a Ukrainian girl (played buy a local actress judging by name), a Chernobyl disaster victim Katya, and I felt so close to her. I mean, she wasn’t me in any a sense of the word. But I believed her. I saw girls like she was in my circle of acquaintances in Moscow, and her reactions were very believable.
There is also the thing about normal life in crazy time. There are a lot of people for whom 90s were a normal peaceful time. Nortern Ireland was not one of them. But neither were Russia, or Ukraine, or other parts of USSR, or many other places in the world. For different reasons. And everywhere life went on, and teenagers had similar problems on top of crazy ones. I think the modern world can relate.
Also, Derry Girls are hilarious, and I love every one of the characters so far.
